The 3 Types Of Pain CBD Can Relieve

The 3 Types Of Pain CBD Can Relieve

Pain has many causes and can be felt in any region of the body. Remember, pain is an electrical signal in our body that is interpreted within the brain.

The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) – to which Dr. Warner, the founder of Well Theory, belongs – defines pain like this: “An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage.”

Note that you can have pain without having actual tissue damage! That is how powerful the nervous system and brain are.

As we age, everyday aches and pains in the joints, muscles, and more are more likely to occur as the cartilage wears down in joints, nerves become dysfunctional. Our muscles become slower to recover after exercise. Usually, we are burdened with a lifetime of chronic inflammation, and our connective tissues become stiff and thus painful.

Low-level chronic inflammation can also cause the nervous system to become dysfunctional and produce pain even in the absence of tissue damage.

Certain diseases can also inflict recurring pain and inflammation. Most chronic pain is what we call ‘non-malignant.’ It is not from an ongoing and damaging source in the body. Pain from cancer is malignant pain; it is produced from tumors and is associated with actual damage.

Pain can sometimes be your body’s way of helping you avoid further damaging a site of injury. When you stub your toe, it may be painful afterward as the body repairs tissue damage. This pain stems from inflammation, which is a normal and natural part of your body’s healing process. The swelling around the site of injury and the sensation of pain will help you avoid hurting your toe even more, so you can recover faster. As the body heals, the pain usually stops.

CBD: Fighting Pain By Reducing Inflammation

While we know that some amount of inflammation is normal and even good for you, there are inflammatory conditions that create “too much” of an inflammatory response. Think of autoimmune disorders – at the root of these diseases is an inappropriate inflammatory response, in which your immune system attacks muscles, nerves, joints, and more. A lifetime of poor diet, bad choices, and breathing polluted air while drinking polluted water can also cause chronic inflammation and pain.

Read More: What Is Oxidative Stress?

CBD is highly effective against inflammatory pain due to its ability to promote balance. Your endocannabinoid system modulates your body’s inflammatory response - this is your internal regulatory system that decides when certain hormones or impulses are released to exert their effects on your body’s natural processes.

CBD can inhibit the release of inflammatory agents, making it “neuroprotective” and effective at calming the sensation of pain. Some studies have shown that cannabinoids, like CBD and its cousin, THC, are up to 20 times more potent than common over-the-counter NSAIDs like ibuprofen.

CBD also has a much better side-effect profile than synthetic anti-inflammatories; in fact, there are no known side-effects without taking massive doses.

Inflammation has also been linked to some “lifestyle” diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes. Unchecked inflammation may contribute to poor overall health, so it’s essential to make sure your lifestyle promotes internal balance as well.

You should try to eat an anti-inflammatory diet, avoid stress as much as possible, and rest often enough so your body can heal itself regularly.

Restful sleep is one of the best ways to relieve and reduce bodily inflammation – and no one is immune to excess inflammation. We all have to reduce inflammation.

Effective Against Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is pain caused by damage inflicted on your nerves or the nerves themselves’ internal dysfunction. This type of pain is experienced by those who have multiple sclerosis, diabetes, chemotherapy, and injuries like herniated discs. A 2017 study indicated that CBD was able to help relieve chronic neuropathic pain in humans.

Neuropathy is a common symptom associated with diabetes and pre-diabetes.

This type of nerve damage occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the nervous system over time, resulting in pain, tingling, and numbness in the extremities – particularly the feet.

Excess alcohol intake, physical injury to the nerves, low vitamin intake, thyroid disorders, and rheumatoid arthritis can all contribute to neuropathic pain as well.

Lidocaine is a standard treatment for neuropathic pain, and topical lidocaine patches and creams are prescribed to diabetic neuropathy patients. Our CBD Cream is formulated with Lidocaine to help soothe pain on contact. It contains pure CBD Isolate to harness your body’s natural endocannabinoid system – promoting balance and gently relieving inflammation at its source.

Insurance companies do not cover many lidocaine products, and co-pays and co-insurance are often costly.

Our natural product gives you the lidocaine with many natural products that reduce nerve pain; generally, this is far cheaper than a ‘non-covered’ prescription medication.

How It Relieves Other Types Of Pain

Every night, as your body moves through the stages of sleep, it works to heal inflammation. Getting the right amount of sleep and getting restful sleep is especially important if you deal with chronic inflammation. One of the only times the brain has to detox itself is during sleep! Why not give your healing rest an added anti-inflammatory and antioxidant boost?

While anxiety may not be technically considered physically painful, it can worsen inflammatory conditions and poor physical health. In the medical and surgical worlds, anxiety is well-known to make all conditions of pain worse. CBD is a great alternative pain reliever in that sense as well.

While effective in relieving pain directly, CBD is also tied towards improving outside factors that can help reduce your pain as well. CBD is, as mentioned, great for relieving anxiety and is also an effective sleep aid.

If one can control their anxiety and sleep better, the pain will be less in general.

Full Spectrum CBD Softgels

Our CBD Softgels are a great addition to your bedtime routine. Take the guesswork out of your dose with this pre-measured supplement containing Full Spectrum CBD and no other added ingredients. Wake up refreshed, well-rested, and ready to go about your day with less pain.

Breathe Your Way To Less Stress – Here’s How:

Breathe Your Way To Less Stress - Here's How:

Harness Your Breath

for less stress & better mental clarity

As we near the end of 2020, many of us, if not most of us, are probably under a great deal of stress. There are medical resources you can use to combat stress – if you find that it is negatively impacting your day-to-day life, we recommend you see your physician, religious leader, or a licensed counselor – but there are also at-home practices you can utilize as well.

Today, I’d like to talk to you about breathing exercises, how they work, and the research that supports their effectiveness.

The Science Behind Breathing Exercises

how they improve your overall well-being

Diaphragmatic breathing is a breathing exercise that focuses on strengthening the diaphragm, the muscle that helps you breathe. The technique directs your breath to the abdomen and is sometimes called “belly breathing.” When you breathe into your abdomen instead of your chest, you’re able to get a deeper breath – which in turn stretches and strengthens your diaphragm.

A 2017 study investigated the effects of diaphragmatic breathing on emotional, physical, and mental health. The participants in this study showed increased focus and attention and lowered cortisol levels. Cortisol is your “fight or flight” or “stress” hormone – so reducing it naturally results in relieving the sensation of stress.

Diaphragmatic breathing is an integrative mind-body practice that is meditative at its core. It involves expanding the belly, deepening the inhalation and is a core component of certain yoga practices. Physiological evidence has indicated that this type of breathing practice can significantly reduce blood pressure, enhance your cardiovascular health and function, and relieve anxiety.

At Well Theory, we believe in integrative health and functional medicine – treating the body as a whole instead of focusing on one symptom to combat. There has been an artificial and dangerous separation of the mind and body for too long in science and medicine – especially in surgery.

We believe in the whole person, the mind, body, and spirit that make us human. Our products and resources are designed to improve your overall health, function, and well-being – and harnessing your breath to improve your physiological health is one way you can put our methodology into practice.

How To Practice Breathing Exercises

easily & at home

First, find a comfortable position. This may be sitting upright in a chair or on a cushion, lying in bed, or laying on a yoga mat on the floor. It’s essential to make sure you’re practicing good posture while you’re doing this exercise, so your diaphragm has enough room to stretch thoroughly, and you can take the deepest breaths possible.

Place one hand on your chest and one hand on your stomach – just below your rib cage. Inhale slowly through your nose, and make sure to focus on moving the hand on your abdomen. The hand on your chest shouldn’t move at all, as you are directing your breath into your core.

Breathe out slowly through your mouth, gently tightening your abdominal muscles to complete the strengthening exercise.

Now that you know how to breathe, you can put it into practice. You can count your breaths both for pacing and as a form of meditation. Try inhaling for a count of 4, holding your breath for 7seconds, and then slowly exhaling to a count of 8. Start slow – try this practice for 5 minutes at first, then build up your practice length over time. Some cannot do this at first. Modify the count to your ability.

You can also practice visualization while you breathe. As you inhale through your nose, imagine that all the stress and tension in your body is flowing from your arms and legs into your abdomen. As you exhale, visualize that tension leaving your body through your breath.

If you don’t have the time for a targeted breathing exercise every day, sometimes all you need is one breath. If you’re seated at your desk, roll your shoulders back, and breathe in deeply through your nose. As you exhale, really flex your abdominal muscles to push the air out, fully emptying your lungs. Envision your ribs moving toward the hips.

Looking for other ways to relieve tension? Try our new CBD Softgels. CBD is a natural stress reducer, pain reliever, and anti-inflammatory. It gently engages your endocannabinoid system – your body’s internal regulatory system – to promote balance and well-being. These softgels are designed to absorb quickly for maximum benefits, with no added ingredients.

Natural Ways To Relieve Oxidative Stress

Natural Ways To Relieve Oxidative Stress

What Is Oxidative Stress?

and why you should avoid it

Oxidative stress is what happens when there is an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. Free radicals are released when your body creates energy sources from food – when you breathe, oxygen molecules are broken down by the mitochondria to make usable fuel, and unpaired electrons – free radicals – are released.

These free oxygen species, free radicals, attempt to find new pairings. As they move through the body, they can cause cell and tissue damage because they will attach to any part of a cell possible – and this ultimately destroys the cell.

Your body naturally produces antioxidants to fight free radicals, but often, many of us aren’t producing enough. As you age, you produce fewer antioxidants - so supplementing becomes necessary. Free radicals or oxygen species are a necessary part of the process to create usable energy for the body. However, as with most of life, a proper balance is necessary. In today’s society that balance is usually disrupted and heavily weighted toward damaging oxidation.

While oxidative stress plays a natural role in the aging process, there are outside factors that can increase the amount of oxidative stress you undergo.

Lifestyle factors – such as exposure to pollution, lack of exercise, and more – can contribute and put a strain on your body.

Oxidative stress is difficult to diagnose – so if you find that you’re more tired than usual, have difficulty concentrating, or have noticed other similar symptoms, you may already be suffering from it. Click below to read our blog about common oxidative stress symptoms and how to recognize them:

Read More: 5 Signs You’re Experiencing Oxidative Stress

Natural Ways To Relieve Oxidative Stress

lifestyle, diet, and habits

A large body of medical research has suggested that long-term oxidative stress may contribute to the development of certain chronic conditions or lifestyle diseases.

These include diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and others. Of course, any of these conditions can be caused by other factors, like genetics, diet, etc., but to lessen your risk, you should try to avoid oxidative stress.

The first way you can naturally relieve oxidative stress is by making changes to your diet. Including foods that are rich in antioxidants can help your body fight off free radicals more easily.

Many of us aren’t producing enough antioxidants naturally, and adding more into your diet is a great way to make up for it.

Here are some great sources of antioxidants:

  • Dark chocolate
  • Artichokes
  • Kale
  • Beets
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries

You may have noticed that there were a lot of berries in that list - and there’s a good reason for that! Dark-colored berries, like blueberries, strawberries, and more contain a type of compound called anthocyanins, which is highly antioxidant and gives berries their dark color. Tart cherries are deeply pigmented; they have extremely high antioxidant content because of it.

This is why we decided to develop our Tart Cherry Extract supplement. While you can eat cherries and drink tart cherry juice, a lot of these products have added sugars to offset the sour taste of tart cherries. Our supplement allows you to take tart cherry extract in its purest form – with no added sugars and no sour taste.

Other Changes You Can Make

to scavenge free radicals

There are other things aside from diet changes that can help you reduce oxidative stress:

  1. Avoid pollution. Consider getting an air purifier for your home, and also get some plants to naturally filter the air. Place them strategically, where you spend most of your time.

Keep a high concentration of plants in your bedroom; since your body does most of its healing work when you’re asleep, be sure to give it a fighting chance. A good water filter is a must as well.

  2. While including new, antioxidant-rich foods in your diet, avoid others. Try to limit your processed food intake, particularly foods that are high in sugar and fat. Avoid smoking entirely and limit your alcohol consumption.

High fructose corn syrup was cleared by the FDA as safe and has a large foothold in the food industry; however, it is abundantly clear that this is a source of much of our current health problems.

  3. Reduce stress. It’s so important to make sure you have a great self-care routine that works for you. In addition to that, you can take up a daily yoga practice, take social media breaks now and then, and make time for the things you enjoy.

Mental stress forces the body to release and produce molecules that create inflammation and oxidative stress. There is a very strong and true mind-body link and stress should be managed.

At the end of the day, it’s fairly simple to reduce oxidative stress through small lifestyle changes. But if you need an antioxidant boost, reach for any one of our Well Theory products.

CBD is a powerful antioxidant by itself, but can also help you holistically reduce pain and stress, which can also contribute to oxidative stress.

How PEA May Relieve Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

How PEA May Relieve Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune, inflammatory disorder associated with chronic low-grade inflammation. When you have MS, your immune system turns against your own body – eating away at the protective coverings surrounding your nerves. The resulting nerve damage can cause many different symptoms, including pain, vision loss, fatigue, and impaired coordination as communication between the brain and body is disrupted.

Physical therapy and certain medications that help suppress the immune system can be effective against MS symptoms and slow this autoimmune disease’s progression. There are many prescription-grade medications available too. Please seek the evaluation of a neurologist or orthopedic surgeon if you believe you may have this disorder.

Nonetheless, many natural substances have been studied concerning the treatment of symptoms of MS. We have incorporated a few into our products due to the massive benefits that are possible.

What Is PEA (Palmitoylethanolamide) ?

the role it plays in inflammation

The analgesic (pain-relieving) and anti-inflammatory properties of PEA make it a promising supplement for combating the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis.

Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is produced naturally by the body in response to inflammation and pain. Some research suggests that it engages your body’s natural endocannabinoid or regulatory system to reduce pain and relieve inflammation.

Your endocannabinoid system is essentially what regulates your hormones, your sensation of pain, hunger, anxiety, etc. It also tells your body when to start and end its natural inflammatory processes. Also, the endocannabinoid system plays a large role in the overall balance of your immune system.

Inflammation is a normal part of your body’s healing routines. When you bump against a table, the swelling that occurs is designed to protect the site of injury so it can heal properly. Swelling is a marker of the first phase of healing. This is an average and appropriate amount of inflammation – but when your body produces too much inflammation, it can cause problems.

How PEA Can Relieve MS Symptoms

Today, PEA is available in pill, powder, and capsule form as a natural supplement.

Initial research has shown that PEA may also help support the brain, heart, and, most importantly – immune health. By keeping a more healthy, balanced immune system, there is some potential in some measure of relief from autoimmune symptoms.

By relieving inflammation around the nerves, relieving pain associated with nerve damage, and providing healthy immune function support, PEA shows excellent promise as a natural method of relief for MS pain and symptoms.

This is why we decided to develop PEA products here at Well Theory. We offer two topical creams that contain PEA that is great for soothing away pain quickly in a targeted setting.

For overall wellness and nerve support, we recommend taking our Essential Multivitamin.

Our PEA Essential Multivitamin is explicitly designed to relieve pain in aching muscles, bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, and fascia while supporting connective tissues and joints’ health and function. It is protective against joint degeneration and naturally reduces inflammation while promoting healing. PEA has shown great promise in reducing neuroinflammation.

What Vitamin D Deficiency Can Do To Your Health

What Vitamin D Deficiency Can Do To Your Health

These days, most of us are not getting the vital nutrients we need from our diets and lifestyle habits. These vitamin deficiencies may seem small but can build up and impact your overall well-being over time. Today, I’d like to talk about how a vitamin D deficiency can affect your health, how to notice signs of such a weakness, and what you can do about it.

What Does Vitamin D Do?

One of vitamin D’s prominent roles is in helping your body absorb calcium. Calcium is the building block of bone. Without the right vitamin D levels, it doesn’t matter how many glasses of milk you drink – you still won’t be absorbing the necessary amount of Calcium, and your bone health will suffer.

This is why, when you look at different types of milk in the grocery store, vitamin D-fortified milk is available for purchase. The Federal Government realized that we do not get enough of this vital nutrient in our regular diets.

In addition to fortifying bones, vitamin D is also essential for maintaining the health of your teeth, facilitating normal immune function, and supporting healthy muscles as well. Overall, it’s an often-overlooked vitamin that plays a significant role in maintaining your overall health.

Vitamin D has essential benefits in muscle function, nervous system function, and cardiovascular balance. This nutrient acts as a steroid hormone and has significant effects on most human functions. It has a broad range of actions that we have only recently discovered. Many of modern society’s chronic diseases are caused, at least in part, by vitamin D deficiencies.

For muscle, vitamin D affects the levels of specific proteins in the muscle fiber itself. It will also change the calcium levels within the muscle’s mitochondria, which affects energy production. With vitamin D deficiency, the muscle will have fewer necessary enzymes as well. A vitamin D deficiency can lead to falls; if this fall happens on a weak bone, a break will occur.

There are receptors for vitamin D on the immune system’s cells; vitamin D plays a massive role in your innate and adaptive immunity. Vitamin D enhances the macrophages’ ability to participate in the initial defense from viruses and other pathogens by helping them produce needed cytokines.

It is common knowledge that infants with Rickets (vitamin D deficiency) have pneumonia more often than others. Extensive population data studies also demonstrated that vitamin D deficiency is associated with susceptibility to respiratory infections. Supplementing vitamin D reduces the ability to catch a respiratory illness.

These are a few examples of our growing knowledge of the importance of this nutrient. vitamin D also plays a role in cancer prevention, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, skin health, inflammatory conditions like MS, and other human problems.

You can get your daily amount of vitamin D in two ways. First, you can absorb it through your skin by exposing yourself to a healthy amount of sunlight. You can, as mentioned previously, get it in your diet as well. Ideally, you should get vitamin D through the foods you eat, but nutritional deficiencies due to diet choices and food availability are common, so you can also supplement. Supplementation is the most efficient and convenient way to get this nutrient.

Typical foods with high vitamin D content are salmon, sardines, shrimp, fortified yogurts, cereals, milk, orange juice, and egg yolks.

Symptoms Of Vitamin D Deficiency

If you feel more tired than usual or have noticeable aches and pains, you may have a vitamin D deficiency. Severe muscle pain or weakness can also indicate a need for more vitamin D in your diet. In the most trying of circumstances, you may feel pain in your bones or even experience stress fractures in your legs, feet, and hips.

Your doctor can diagnose a vitamin D deficiency with a quick blood draw. If you are severely deficient, they may also order X-rays to check the strength of your bones.

Your doctor may recommend an over-the-counter supplement or a high-dose prescribed supplement depending on your deficiency’s severity. Other serum markers might need to be checked to understand your bone metabolism, too. It may be that a full nutritional, hormonal, and metabolic analysis be completed. It may be beneficial to go outside and soak up sun rays also – within reason, as the skin cancer risk must be balanced.

How Much Vitamin D You Need:

The amount of vitamin D you need each day depends on your age and whether you’re breastfeeding or pregnant. Various regulatory groups have decided what standard levels are required to prevent Rickets and osteomalacia; these are the conditions caused by severe deficiencies of vitamin D. The recommended amounts, in international units (IU), are as follows:

  • Adults 19-70 years: 600 IU or 15mcg
  • Adults 71 years and older: 800 IU or 20mcg
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women: 600 IU or 15mcg

If you are supplementing, it may be essential to take a multivitamin that pairs the right vitamins and minerals together in the recommended amounts. For Calcium to be absorbed properly, you need to have the correct vitamin D ratio in your system.

Our CBD Multivitamin was designed by an orthopedic surgeon to optimize your musculoskeletal health – meaning that it is specifically designed to support your bones, muscles, tendons, and joints.

It also contains immune-boosting vitamins and Full Spectrum CBD to support every aspect of your wellness, reduce pain and harmful inflammation, and relieve stress.  CBD has been found to support bone and immune function health, too; this phytochemical can enhance the effect of nutrients like Vitamin D.

The Science Behind Our New Herbal Immunity Defense Multivitamin

The Science Behind Our New Herbal Immunity Defense Multivitamin

Hi, Dr. Meredith Warner Here -

These days, many of us aren’t getting all the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals we need from our diets. This can lead to a host of problems – weight gain, fatigue, chronic inflammation, and more – but today, I’d like to talk about how nutritional deficiencies can affect your immune function.

I decided to develop my new Herbal Immunity Defense multivitamin to fill these nutritional gaps. This unique supplement is an immune-boosting powerhouse designed to optimize and restore vital immune function - and help you build a foundation for optimal health.

Because most of us do not have private chefs or the time needed to eat all the vegetables and fruits that would give us our best chance of a sound immune system, I have considered supplementation to be one of the best ways to do so. Obtaining all nutrition through diet alone would be fantastic and is the usual recommendation. But most of us live a hectic life in the real world. This is where supplementation with essential and even non-essential nutrients becomes necessary.

Designed To Deliver These Benefits:

My Herbal Immunity Defense multivitamin is designed to deliver immune support in every aspect – through directly boosting white blood cell count, improving nutrition, and reducing overall bodily stress. Each ingredient was handpicked to help revitalize and restore your body’s natural immune function so that you can fight off illness with ease.

This natural + effective supplement supports your healthy immune system by:

  • Promoting healthy antioxidant activity
  • Providing a high potency source of essential nutrients that support the white blood cells
  • Helping to reduce oxidative stress throughout the body
  • Improving the production and communication of cytokines and chemokines
  • Helping to balance right inflammation and reduce lousy inflammation

Plant-Based Ingredients

curated for full-body support

Echinacea Purpurea
Echinacea is a North American flower in the sunflower family. This potent botanical supports the immune system by supporting the regular activity of white blood and natural killer (NK) cells and increasing the overall number of useful white blood cells. These cells are essential in fighting off illness.

Olive Leaf Extract
This extract has been shown to have high antiviral and antimicrobial properties. This means that it can interfere with bacteria and viruses’ ability to replicate, spread, and cause infection. This ingredient helps to control viral load, and this allows your immune system a better chance.

Garlic
You probably have garlic in your spice cabinet – but did you know about its immunity-building properties? It has been used for its antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties for hundreds of years. Because of these properties, like Olive Leaf Extract, Garlic can help the body destroy and/or inhibit viruses and other microorganisms before illness sets in.

Schisandra
This plant is used as an “adaptogen” – it increases your body’s resistance to disease and stress, boosts energy, and increases endurance. Essentially, adaptogens are a natural substance that helps the body adapt to stress and exert a “stabilizing” effect on bodily processes – promoting balance. This herb stimulates the immune system to work harder and more effectively to fight off an illness at the onset of infection.

Pine Bark Extract
Pine Bark Extract is a potent source of Vitamin C and contains an array of beneficial phytochemicals highly antioxidant. Suppose you are out of shape, exposed to pollution, or undergo stress regularly. In that case, your body produces an excess of free radical compounds that can cause cellular damage throughout your body – Such free radicals can destroy a cell’s wall or membrane, for example. By damaging white blood cells, such compounds can weaken your immune response. This phenomenon is known as “oxidative stress,” and over time, it can wreak havoc on every one of your body’s processes. Pine Bark Extract’s high antioxidant content helps remove this stress naturally, giving your immune system a fighting chance.

How PEA Works

How PEA Works

What Is PEA?

and how it works

Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is a natural and powerful way to manage pain, inflammation, and damage from oxidative stress. PEA is made in a similar way in humans and in plants, and it can be isolated from peanuts, soy, egg yolks, and other food sources.

How PEA Has Been Used

to naturally reduce pain

Since the late 1950s, PEA has been known to be an effective method of managing allergic and inflammatory reactions. Like many natural products, PEA exerts its action through multiple pathways.

One of these involves the stimulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR) which regulate gene expression.

Another way is by stimulating TRPV1 receptors which can cause inflammation and pain when they are sensitized.

Another is to simply downregulate mast cell production and degranulation. This works through the Autacoid Local Injury Antagonism (ALIA) system. PEA also stimulates the GPCR-55 cannabinoid receptor and also indirectly activates the CB-1 and CB-2 receptors by modulating FAAH.

The amazing, therapeutic effects of PEA are developed through the synergistic (additive) actions of these various mechanisms. These actions are particularly important in the central and peripheral nervous systems.
