5 Things To Know About Oxidative Stress & Free Radicals

Free radicals come from the normal metabolic processes of our cells.

For example, we use oxygen, in combination with food, to form energy that our cells can utilize. The chemical processes that achieve the formation of energy take place in the mitochondria. The mitochondria are the engines of the cell and are responsible for many baseline functions of life.

When we breathe, we gather oxygen in the lungs and this is dispersed to all the cells of the body by way of circulation (blood flow). The oxygen combines with fuel (food) to form usable fuel for the cells. 

When the cells use this oxygen to form energy, free radicals are formed. This is due to adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production by the mitochondrial engine.

The by-product of this process are free radicals.

1. What Causes Oxidative Stress?

Free radicals are a normal part of life. The chemical process of fuel production is called cellular redox. We mostly think of free radicals as ‘bad.’ However, free radicals are beneficial to the cells, but only in small amounts.

Larger amounts of free radicals are damaging and are the actual source of what is called ‘oxidative stress’. In small amounts, the by-products of cellular redox systems can help cellular responses and immune function. But at oxidative stress levels, cell structures are damaged.

Oxidative stress plays a large role in what we call ‘lifestyle diseases’. These include cancers, arthritis, aging, autoimmune disorders neurodegenerative problems, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

So, in theory, if we can manage our free radicals properly, we can prevent or manage these diseases.

2. What Are Free Radicals, & What Do They Do?

A molecule with one or more unpaired electrons is called a free radical. These are formed from the breakup of a chemical bond. Each fragment of the formerly bound molecules keeps one electron.

This happens during aerobic respiration in the mitochondria and also from enzymatic processes during cell functions. Radiation and toxins can also cause these molecules to split and form free radicals.

Free radicals can also come from immune cell activation, excessive exercise, ischemia, infection, aging, cancer and inflammation. 

Air and water pollution, cigarette smoke, heavy metals, some drugs and alcohol can also cause free radicals to form.

3. How Oxidative Stress & Free Radicals Are Connected

The excessive free radicals and oxidants cause oxidative stress. This is when normal cells are destroyed by the radicals.

Other structures like proteins, lipids, lipoproteins, and DNA are also targets of excessive ROS. The free radicals cause oxidation of normal structures. This means that an electron is stolen from the normal structure to complete the pair of the free radical.

Remember that the free radical is a byproduct and consists of a molecule with an unpaired and lonely electron. Electrons are negatively charged structures. The electrons want to exist with a partner, to form a pair.

The free radical will take this pair from the closest or most convenient source. Too often, this is a normal and needed structure in your body. Oxidation of DNA causes mutations. Oxidation of cell membranes will destroy them. Oxidation of proteins changes the structure in a bad way.

4. How Does This Affect the Body?

The human body has a system in place to keep a proper balance of reactive oxygen species or free radicals. We use antioxidants to achieve this goal.

The antioxidants attach themselves to the free radicals and neutralize them before they can cause damage. Antioxidants are either produced by the human body or brought into the human body through diet or supplements. First, What Are Free Radicals?

Understanding what free radicals are requires a quick chemistry lesson:

Atoms, the building blocks of matter, are surrounded by electrons. Each “layer” of electrons is called a “shell,” and only a certain number of electrons can fit into these shells. Once these shells are full, electrons find the next atom to fill.

If an atom has a shell that isn’t full of electrons yet, it may bond with another atom to use the electrons located in that atom’s shell. These types of atoms are called free radicals. Atoms with a full outer shell are stable and don’t “scavenge” for electrons, but these free radicals are unstable - they seek other atoms or molecules to bond to.

In your body, when oxygen molecules are processed and split into single atoms with unpaired electrons, they become unstable free radicals and “scavenge” the body searching for pairings. This leads to a process called oxidative stress. 

As free radicals move through the body, they can break down cells over time – damaging cells in virtually every part of the body, and leading to symptoms like headaches, fatigue, faster aging, and more. One way they do this is to destroy the outer layer (membrane) of a cell.

What Are Antioxidants?

Consider antioxidants the “cure” to the problem of free radicals and oxidative stress.

CBD oil is most often used in edibles. These oils are usually Full Spectrum, which means they contain all the beneficial compounds of the industrial hemp plant, including trace (legal) amounts of THC or Broad Spectrum, which contains all the beneficial compounds except THC. CBD is one of the many naturally-occurring chemical compounds found in the flowers and leaves of cannabis plants.

Unlike THC (the psychoactive element of cannabis,) CBD cannot get you high. It does, however, have proven anti-inflammatory, pain-fighting, and anxiety-reducing properties.

When small doses are taken daily, a slow, natural, and steady return to hormonal balance and overall well-being can occur. Including CBD in a ritual you complete at one to three times a day is a great way to get the dosage you need – without interrupting your daily routines.

How To Cook With CBD

The first thing you have to remember when cooking with CBD is that you shouldn’t actually “cook” it in the traditional sense. CBD has been shown to lose its efficacy when it’s heated. Therefore, it is not recommended as a cooking oil – you should not use it while sauteing, baking, boiling, or frying anything that requires it to be heated over 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 

CBD will begin to break down and evaporate anywhere from 320-350 degrees, so while you can heat it somewhat, it is not recommended. CBD oil is commonly described as an “earthy” tasting olive oil that gets more bitter when heated – so be careful with how much you use and how much you heat it.

It’s best used as a finishing oil or in dishes that don’t require heating to be prepared – such as smoothies, pestos, and salad dressings.

Cannabinoids bind well to fat and oil-based ingredients - so use it with some sort of grease or fat. This way, you can take full advantage of the benefits in your CBD oil.

Less Is More

Again, CBD is not psychoactive and has few, if any, negative side effects. Even so, it is important to start with smaller doses to see how you respond – and consult with your physician to make sure it will not interact with any medications you are taking.

Because CBD is a supplement and not a heavily standardized medication, some trial and error is necessary – your experience will be different from anyone else’s. 

Thankfully, CBD is a forgiving compound. Just remember that less is more, especially if you are new to supplementing with CBD.

Get Adequate Rest

This may seem counter-intuitive – you aren’t doing a lot of concentrating while you’re asleep. But good rest is essential to improving and protecting brain health.

One study on the benefits of sleep focused on the academic outcomes of students who had good “sleep hygiene,” and compared their grades to those who didn’t. The study found that one of the main causes of lower test scores was a lack of good sleep. 

But you can also rest during the day too. While generally, you should avoid daytime naps (as this can interrupt your natural circadian rhythms and negatively impact the rest you do get,) you should make time to rest in other ways. There is a school of thought that believes in the power of naps, of course, we just believe that is almost impossible for most people’s lives. 

Mindful activities with a component of meditation are very helpful for resting the brain. Try doing yoga in the mornings, really clocking out of work for your lunch break, or squeezing in a meditation session at the end of your workday. If you know that you work best in the mornings, wake up early and get high-priority tasks out of the way first. 

Try to shut off screens around the time the sun goes down, so you don’t disrupt melatonin production with blue light. If you have to work on your computer in the evenings, wear blue light filtering glasses.

Stop Multi-Tasking

In today’s busy world, this can almost seem like an impossible task – but it isn’t. If you know that your priorities are going to pull in you many different directions at once, actively schedule time where you focus on only one task at a time. Set alarms on your phone if you have to.

One study found that “Individuals who engage in heavier media-multitasking are found to perform worse on cognitive control tasks and exhibit more socio-emotional difficulties.” Multitasking can affect your mental and emotional health, so it’s important to focus on one thing at a time.

What Is CBD?
