Why You Should Protect Your Mitochondria – And How To Do It

Why You Should Protect Your Mitochondria - And How To Do It

Most of us learned that the mitochondria is the “powerhouse of the cell” from middle school biology, but beyond knowing what their function is, we know little else about the impact of their function.

Today, we’re going to talk about why you should be taking steps to improve your mitochondrial health, and how:

First, A Refresher

Mitochondria are found in every single cell throughout your body. Essentially, they serve as “batteries” in your cells – they store energy and power certain functions throughout your cells. The main function of mitochondria is their ability to break down carbohydrates and fatty acids to produce energy – which supports all of your body’s essential functions.

When your mitochondria are unable to function properly, it can lead to a whole host of issues. Some of diseases and ailments caused or aggravated by mitochondrial dysfunction include, but are not limited to:

  • Premature Aging
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Dementia
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Migraine Headaches
  • Parkinson’s

What Causes Mitochondrial Deficiency?

and how to prevent it

But how do mitochondrial deficiencies happen? Your cells need nutrients to function properly, so mitochondria are susceptible to nutritional deficiencies. Other things that can affect cellular, and therefore mitochondrial function, also include exposure to environmental toxins and an increase in oxidative stress.

Your mitochondria don’t just produce energy, however. They also produce other chemicals essential to the cell’s function, including Alpha-Lipoic Acid.

Alpha-lipoic acid is a mitochondrial antioxidant known as a “universal antioxidant,” due to its water and fat-solubility. This means that this antioxidant has the ability to travel throughout your body and cells, delivering antioxidant benefits in a widespread manner.

Alpha Lipoic Acid also helps produce energy for normal bodily function by converting blood sugar, or glucose. This makes supplementing with ALA essential if you are suffering from diabetes.

Damaged and defective mitochondria are one of the first signs of health issues, and ALA helps protect your mitochondria from damage due to its antioxidant abilities.

Try Our New Alpha-Lipoic Acid Supplement Today!

ALA is not only a powerful antioxidant in and of itself, it also helps your body’s production of its main antioxidant – glutathione. It’s also been shown to assist in blood sugar control and increase microcirculation in the limbs.

This is a great natural supplement for anyone looking to improve the overall function of their mitochondrial health, but is especially helpful for those suffering from diabetic neuropathy! For purposes of nerve health in diabetics, ALA acts as a cofactor and can help regulate nerve metabolism, energy production of the nerve cells and mitochondrial biogenesis within the nerve cells.

Due to its antioxidant nature, it can also help reduce oxidative damage and the bodily inflammation that comes with it. If you’re looking to naturally support your nervous system and metabolic health, this ALA supplement is an excellent addition to your daily supplement routine.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid: An Essential Anti-Inflammatory And Antioxidant Supplement

Alpha-Lipoic Acid: An Essential Anti-Inflammatory And Antioxidant Supplement

Alpha-lipoic acid is a powerful supplement you can use to help prevent oxidative stress.

It has the ability to scavenge free radicals in a very efficient manner and also enhances the production of glutathione. Glutathione is one of the main antioxidants your body naturally produces.

ALA also has been proven to chelate, or bind, to toxic metals, helping to remove them from the body. Toxic metals are also contributors to oxidative stress, so these three functions of the ALA supplement make it a powerful defense against harmful free radicals.

Since oxidative stress is the source of almost all chronic disease and chronic pain, then ALA is an amazing adjunctive molecule to manage the symptoms of these problems. It’s most commonly used to fight the nerve pain symptoms associated with diabetes.

How Alpha Lipoic Acid Works

The structure of the lipoic acid molecule is an eight-carbon dithiol compound. Because of the two thiol groups, it is amazingly antioxidant. These thiol groups are very good at accepting free radicals and neutralizing them.

In fact, only the NAD(P)H/NAD(P)+ system is more efficient at the reduction of free radicals. Lipoic acid is also a cofactor for enzymes integral to mitochondrial energy production.

Glutathione, the antioxidant that ALA helps enhance the production of, is very important in the cell’s ability to bind to and dispose of excessive and potentially damaging metals. These include copper, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, nickel, cobalt, iron, and lead.

ALA helps to increase glutathione levels inside the cells. This enhances our ability to detoxify from pollutants and toxins.

How Free Radicals Can Harm Your Health

Cellular metabolism naturally produces free radicals, or reactive oxygen species (ROS). These might also be reactive nitrogen species (RNS). Excessive amounts of nitric oxide (NO) are produced during inflammatory conditions and this leads to the RNS and thus nitrosative stress (NS). This then leads to cellular injury and death.

Too many ROS and RNS will lead to protein misfolding, protein aggregation, DNA damage, RNA damage, lipid peroxidation, cellular wall destruction and more problems.

There is a normal level of ROS and RNS that is needed for cellular communication. The problem happens where there is too much stress and inflammation. This happens with pollution, lifestyle stress, toxins, poor diet, obesity, etc. It behooves us all to have a way to help the body neutralize excessive ROS and RNS.

Taking ALA as a supplement is just one way to do this for ourselves.

How The Body Naturally Relieves Oxidative Stress

Our cells and mitochondria can either eliminate or neutralize excessive ROS and RNS. Elimination requires enzymes and chemical reactions. Neutralization requires molecules that can link to the ROS or RNS and make them inert; such substances are vitamins A, C, E and glutathione, zinc, selenium, etc.

Each antioxidant is highly specific and can only neutralize one or two types of free radical species. This is why a diet rich in many different micronutrients is so necessary. This is also why it is important to supplement with groups of different antioxidants daily.

Our main endogenous antioxidant is glutathione. This substance not only neutralizes free radicals, but it recycles Vitamins C and E. These are essential exogenous molecules that we must have for antioxidant functions.

In addition, glutathione is needed for DNA repair, protein synthesis, transport of amino acids and in enzymatic reactions. Glutathione is utilized in every system in the body; this is especially true of the nervous system and of the immune system.

Because ALA promotes and enhances glutathione levels, it too is important for the function of all systems to include the nervous and immune systems. It’s especially important for those with diabetes as well. Long-term high blood sugar is associated with lower amounts of glutathione – this can lead to oxidative stress and tissue damage.

A study found that supplements that enhanced glutathione levels helped to lower oxidative damage in people with uncontrolled diabetes – regardless of their high sugar levels.

Try Alpha Lipoic Acid Today!

ALA is important for maintaining the balance of metals in the body and brain too. Many metals are massively important for health and immunity. However, like all else in the body, you can have to few or too many of these metals. ALA binds to excessive levels of copper, zinc, iron and heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury).

This is due to the geometry of the molecule with a backbone of charges that envelope the metal ions.

In short, alpha-lipoic acid should be strongly considered as daily supplementation for your diet. It should be one of a variety of antioxidants to assist in anti-aging functions, nervous system function, immune system function and all general cellular repair and protection processes.

If you have diabetes, this is an essential supplement for naturally improving your symptom management routines.

ALA will allow your own glutathione production to be better and more effective. It also will help to combat excessive levels of damaging metals in our industrialized environments.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid is one of the best supplements you can take to enhance your overall wellness. Most of us aren’t getting the antioxidants we need from our diets alone, and ALA’s ability to supplement your antioxidant intake, bind to oxidative heavy metals, and assist your body in producing its own essential antioxidants makes it a powerhouse supplement for fighting off the ravages of oxidative stress.

The Best Way To Recover From An Injury? Prevention

The Best Way To Recover From An Injury? Prevention

The Body's Response To Injury

The body’s natural response to an injury is inflammation. Not all inflammation is bad.
Inflammation is a key factor in the body’s ability to recover and heal from injuries; however, too much inflammation can be bad and lead to other problems.

Inflammation is your immune system’s answer to fighting off infection and the initial healing from injury; however, sometimes the white blood cells causing the good inflammation might get confused and attack healthy tissue and organs.

This is when acute inflammation can become bothersome chronic inflammation.

Relieving Acute Inflammation

Acute inflammation is the typical and appropriate response your body makes when you have an injury or bacterial infection for example.

Acute inflammation is short-term and will go away once the injury is healed. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories and cold compresses can be enough to manage acute inflammation. Of course, if there is an actual bacterial infection, you will want to reach out to your physician to determine if antibiotics are necessary.

Acute inflammation isn’t always something that can be avoided, but proper care of the injury and inflammation management will help it clear up faster.

Preventing Chronic Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is a trickier beast to deal with. You might not even realize you have chronic inflammation.

Sometimes it can be hard to see or feel the symptoms. Going to a physician for testing can help you determine if you do. The doctor will evaluate your symptoms and may even check your blood for signs of inflammation.

A blood test measures a protein produced by the liver, C-reactive protein (CRP), which rises in response to inflammation. A CRP level between 1 and 3 milligrams per liter of blood often signals a low, yet chronic, level of inflammation. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate is another blood test for inflammation. It is used for people with inflammatory conditions, like rheumatoid arthritis.”

These are basic labs that are generally drawn to look for obvious inflammation; there are a slew of other cytokines and markers that can be checked in the serum to assess for more insidious chronic inflammation.

Some common factors may increase your risk of developing chronic inflammation:

  • Cholesterol – Higher levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol can restrict blood flow in the arteries.
  • Smoking – Toxins in cigarettes have been linked to chronic inflammation.
  • Overweight – Excess visceral fat in the body can become an easy target for white blood cells responding to an injury making the inflammatory episode last longer. Adipose tissue itself also produces inflammatory cytokines.
  • Poor Sleep – Studies have shown that extended periods of sleep loss (insomnia and sleep apnea) can negatively affect the body’s ability to regulate inflammatory responses.

Daily Anti-Inflammatory Support: CBD Multivitamin

Dr. Meredith Warner, a board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon, formulated her CBD Multivitamin to support the body’s ability to reduce inflammation for better workouts and recovery from surgeries.

Antioxidants & Allergies

Antioxidants & Allergies

Allergy season is in full swing, and if you’re allergic to pollen, you’re probably already feeling congested, having difficulty breathing, have itchy eyes, and more.

Instead of dosing up on antihistamines and other allergy medicines to get through your day, and dealing with their side effects (like drowsiness,) here’s why you should add antioxidant supplements to your routine:

What Are Antioxidants?

First, let’s look at something called free radicals. Free radicals are produced naturally in the body as it goes through its normal processes – using and breaking down oxygen molecules, for example, releases the unpaired electrons that we call “free radicals.”

As these unpaired electrons move through the body seeking new pairings, they can bind to, alter, and damage nearby cells.

Normally, your body produces enough antioxidants to keep free radical levels in check, but certain circumstances can make this difficult. When free radicals outnumber antioxidants in your body, oxidative stress occurs.

Allergies And Antioxidants

When spring arrives, bringing with it time change, pollen, and more time spent outdoors where you may encounter pollutants, oxidative stress can become more common depending on your lifestyle habits.

One study found that: “There is ample evidence that allergic disorders, such as asthma, rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis, are mediated by oxidative stress. Excessive exposure to reactive oxygen and nitrogen species is the hallmark of oxidative stress and leads to damage of proteins, lipids, and DNA. Oxidative stress occurs not only as a result of inflammation but also from environmental exposure to air pollution and cigarette smoke.”

During this time of year, environmental exposure to pollen and other pollutants may put strain on the body, leading to damaging levels of free radicals.

You should go outdoors and enjoy the sunshine, but you can also take measures to ensure that you don’t experience oxidative stress.

How To Increase Antioxidants

The best way to increase your body’s amount of antioxidants is to support its natural efforts in producing them. This means that you should get the right amount of sleep every day, eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and avoid habits that produce free radicals – like smoking, drinking in excess, and more.

That being said, we believe it is difficult for most people to maintain a perfect diet, exercise schedule and sleep routine. Therefore, there must be a different way to tip the balance of oxidation and antioxidants in your favor. We believe that supplements to a good diet is one way to do this.

We have worked hard to create a grouping of effective antioxidant products that allow your body to function at more optimal levels. Yes, it’s possible to supplement your antioxidant intake!

Our Tart Cherry Extract, which you can win in our giveaway linked below, is an excellent natural resource for antioxidant supplementation.

Tart cherries and other deeply pigmented fruits and vegetables contain flavonoids – the phytochemicals responsible for the dark red color of tart cherries.

These flavonoids are rich in antioxidants, and our Tart Cherry Extract makes antioxidant supplementation convenient, without the added sugars of drinking tart cherry juice.

How To Hack Your Natural Sleep Cycle

How To Hack Your Natural Sleep Cycle

If health & wellness is important to you – and since you’re reading our blog, it’s safe to assume it is! – then the amount of sleep you’re getting each day should be at the forefront of your mind.

Forming good sleeping habits is the cornerstone of your overall well-being. Sleep allows your body to rest and recover from damage, plays a role in storing long-term memories, clears out harmful free radicals, and so much more.

The only time that your brain really has to perform its detoxification and rebuilding functions is during sleep.

If you’re struggling to get the right amount of sleep each day, here are some of our most helpful tips to lock in your sleep cycle and improve the duration + quality of your sleep:

How Your Sleep Cycle Works

First, let’s look at what happens when you first fall asleep.

Stage 1: As you first begin to nod off, your brain begins to produce alpha and theta waves to help your body begin to prepare for rest. This slows down your eye movements as well. During this stage, which lasts about 7 minutes, you can be easily woken up.

Stage 2: Your brain begins to produce bursts of activity. This is still a light stage of sleep, but slightly deeper than stage 1.

Stages 3 & 4: This is when deep sleep occurs. REM (rapid eye movement) sleep occurs in this stage. This is when your brain becomes its most active during rest. It usually takes about 90 minutes to enter REM sleep, and you can have up to 4-5 cycles of this stage every night.

REM sleep is considered the time when most of the benefits of sleep occurs, so it’s important that you reach this stage.

How To Get More REM Sleep

You want more REM sleep because not only does your brain do most of its dreaming during this phase – it’s also storing memories, clearing out toxins, and performing other essential tasks.

You need to get through the first two stages to reach REM sleep, so it’s important to set yourself up for success even before your head hits the pillow.

You should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep a night to experience enough cycles of REM sleep. First, make sure you have time for rest. Make it a priority in your daily routines, not an afterthought.

Keep your bedroom cool. As you fall asleep, your body naturally begins to cool off. Keeping a cooler bedroom, having sheets that are breathable, and keeping the fan on can help you fall asleep and stay asleep. There is debate, but the optimal sleep temperature is somewhere around 65-degrees F.

You should keep your bedroom as dark as possible. Consider charging your phone in another room or getting blackout curtains. Light can interrupt your sleep cycle in more ways than one.

Blue light, which is emitted from computer and phone screens, can interrupt your body’s production of melatonin. If you must use a kindle or another small screen for any reason, consider using a pair of blue-light blocking glasses at night.

Supplement For Optimal Rest

Melatonin is what primes your body for rest. As the sun goes down, your body naturally produces it to ensure that you start to feel more tired and fall into restful sleep. But when you look at screens, this “resets” your body’s production of melatonin.

You should stop looking at screens at least 1-2 hours before bedtime to ensure that you naturally produce enough melatonin. But you can also supplement with melatonin to ensure restful sleep as well!

Our Tart Cherry Extract, which you can win in our giveaway linked below, naturally contains melatonin.

In addition to this, it’s a great resource to boost your antioxidant intake. As your body rests, it works to clear out damaging free radicals, which antioxidants intake. By taking this well-rounded supplement, you can support your body’s healing processes in more ways than one.

3 Daily Habits To Boost Your Immune Health

3 Daily Habits To Boost Your Immune Health

As the seasons change, our immune systems let us know. Our immune systems can especially take a hit during spring, as we venture outside more often and come into contact with pollutants and particulate matter, especially if we live in cities or are allergic to pollen.

In addition, the time change we have when we “spring forward” can interrupt our regular sleep cycles, which impacts our overall health – including our immune health.

Here are 3 daily habits you can use to naturally boost your defenses against illness!

Improve Your Healthy Lifestyle

Your immune system is a system, and before you begin forming new habits, you should treat it as such. There are many things researchers still don’t know about the immune response, but so far the research indicates that like most bodily processes, it’s interconnected with all parts of your health and lifestyle.

Diet, exercise, age, stress, and other factors have been shown to impact immune response. So improving key areas of your health should help bolster your immunity. Here are some ways you can improve your lifestyle:

  • Get the right amount of sleep every day. Your body works to reduce toxins throughout your body and brain as you rest, so getting the right amount of sleep is essential for better immune health.
  • Don’t smoke. Smoking puts stress on your lungs and impacts your cardiovascular system as well. There is an incredible amount of toxins in cigarette smoke: this greatly adds to your chronic inflammation and oxidative stress levels.
  • Take extra steps to avoid infection, like washing your hands frequently and trying to not touch your face.
  • Exercise regularly. This helps improve your cardiovascular health, floods you with good endorphins, and relieves stress. Exercise has been shown in many studies to improve immune function as well.
  • Take steps to relieve psychological stress. Exercising will help relieve some of your stress, but try to work self-care into your daily routines, like meditation, yoga, or reading before bed.

Improve Your Diet

Healthy immune systems need healthy, balanced, and vitamin-rich diets. Research has shown that those who are consistently malnourished, are more vulnerable to infectious diseases.

Malnourishment hides itself well; many cases are simply people with very low levels of certain vitamins and minerals – but they do not appear malnourished at all. The elderly are known for this sort of malnourishment too.

There is some evidence in animal studies that certain vitamin deficiencies, like zinc, iron, folic acid, vitamins c, e, and D3, and more – can alter the immune response. Human studies looking at infection rates in elderly populations after supplementation with vitamin C have shown great success with just this one simple change.

Thankfully, it’s possible to get your necessary and essential vitamins, nutrients and minerals from a well-rounded diet. But if you don’t like eating vegetables often or find it is impossible to eat the recommended 7-8 servings a day, you can fill gaps in your diet with a well-rounded daily multivitamin and appropriate additional supplementation.

Supplement Where Necessary

Ideally, you should be getting all the nutrients your immune system needs to function from your diet. Your body absorbs vitamins better when they’re part of a balanced meal. But there is no harm in appropriately supplementing for an additional boost – especially during seasons where you might more easily get sick.

Our Tart Cherry Extract is naturally packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants help fight off harmful free radicals, which can impact every cell in your body – including those involved in your immune response. It also naturally contains melatonin to help promote healing, restful sleep.

Our Herbal Immunity Defense Multi is developed with clean and potent ingredients clinically proven to boost immunity. Elderberry, Echinacea, Quercetin, Schisandra, and more all work together to give your body its best shot at fighting off invaders. These ingredients work to boost your defenses against oxidative stress, decrease harmful inflammation throughout your body, boost energy levels, and more.

Many people interested in staying well during flu season take elderberry and echinacea as a matter of course on a seasonal basis.

You can win both of these supplements by entering our giveaway! Click below to enter:

Why You Should Take Our 7 In One Immunity Booster

Why You Should Take Our 7 In One Immunity Booster

Hi, Dr. Meredith Warner Here -

Years ago, I noticed a problem in the supplement industry. Many companies were advertising single-vitamin supplements as “immunity boosters,” even though this isn’t the best way to ensure a well-rounded boost to immune health.

Certain vitamins absorb better when combined with others. This makes a well-rounded, carefully selected blend of vitamins and minerals essential for an optimal dose. This applies to all multivitamins – not just ones geared towards improving immune health.

With this in mind, I set out to create well-rounded supplements that contain the right amounts of vitamins, with the right ratios between dosings, for optimal absorption.

Today, I’m going to talk about my new 7-in-1 Herbal Immunity Defense Multi:

The Science Behind Our Herbal Immunity Supplement

I set out to create the foremost 7 in 1 immunity support supplement. My Herbal Immunity Defense multi combines the immune-boosting benefits of vitamins Organic Elderberry, Echinacea, garlic, quercetin, olive leaf extract, Schisandra, and pine bark extract.

This powerful formulation is designed to be taken daily during the times of year when we are most prone to illness - so you can help to protect yourself naturally against illness while enhancing your overall immune health + function, improving heart health, and respiratory health.

This supplement is designed to deliver better overall immune health in 3 key ways:

Immune Defense:

Formulated with powerful, natural ingredients to strengthen your immune system from the inside out, providing you with a shield against viruses and infection. Our human immune system developed alongside pathogens such as viruses and we have innate defenses built in; these are often simply poorly functioning due to stress and diet.

Our Herbal Immunity Multi is designed to support our already present immune defenses.

Inflammation Support:

Inflammation is a necessary part of the immune defense system we have. However, too often the inflammation is too much for too long. Too many damaging cytokines are produced and these start to attack our own cells.

The proper balance of good and bad inflammation is needed. This multi is formulated to assist us with that.

Oxidative Stress Reduction:

The Herbal Immunity Multi’s ingredients has antioxidant abilities that allow for the detoxification of reactive oxygen species for pain relief, increased energy, and infection defense. Oxidative stress is a byproduct of fighting inflammation; we need antioxidants to clean up the excessive ROS that is made when fighting illnesses. This supports the optimal performance of the immune cells themselves.

How Our Ingredients Deliver These Benefits:

Organic Elderberry

Elderberry works internally to increase the strength of your immune system to better fight off sickness, all while providing you with necessary antioxidants and inflammation relief. Elderberry has a long and well-known history of assisting immunity during flu and cold seasons.

Echinacea

Echinacea purpurea is a widely cultivated plant used by many to prevent and treat infectious diseases of the lower and upper respiratory tracts. The alkamides in the plant are thought to contribute to the protection of the immune system. There are polysaccharides that assist in the anti-inflammatory effects.

Garlic

Garlic powder not only helps immune function but also effectively lowers cholesterol levels and balances blood sugar levels. This helps to protect the body from stroke, heart disease, and even various forms of cancer. Garlic has allicin as a compound and this breaks down into various sulfur-containing compounds that produce medicinal effects. These compounds help the function of the white blood cells while they fight off pathogens. People that take garlic get colds and cases of flu less often and if they catch a cold or the flu, it does not last as long.

Quercetin

Quercetin, found in nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, is a flavonoid that fights inflammation, blood pressure imbalances, heart disease, diabetes, and more and stimulates your own immune system by decreasing damaging cytokines and enhancing the function of pathogen fighting cytokines. Quercetin is known to help positively modulate the immune function with allergies and when dealing with pathogens. This molecule is abundant in onions, but we have added it to Herbal Immunity as well.

Olive Leaf Extract

Olive Leaf Extract lowers bad cholesterol levels and decreases blood pressure. This is effective in reducing inflammation, promoting heart health, and warding off disease. Olive Leaf Extract has been the symbol of heavenly power in ancient Egypt and was often used medicinally, even during mummification. This herbal remedy is used to treat conditions like the common cold and influenza. Oleuropein, found in the leaf extract, is known to help with disease-fighting. Other phytochemicals in this leaf have demonstrated strong antimicrobial and antiviral properties; they interfere with pathogens’ ability to replicate during invasions of our bodies.

Schisandra

The fruit of the Schisandra plant is an effective adaptogen that helps the body to fight stress and illness and to increase energy levels. Often referred to as the ‘five-flavored berry’ due to the complex taste of the fruits, it has long been used to prevent early aging and to increase lifespan. Schisandra chinensis upregulates certain cytokines that assist the human immune system with fighting off illness. Adaptogens help to normalize or balance our physiology in all systems. Adaptogens help the immune system by balancing the good and bad inflammation during the stressful situation of illness exposure.

Pine Bark Extract

Pine Bark Extract (Pinus pinaster) is antioxidant-rich and works within the body to strengthen the immune system, blocking oxidative damage, viruses, inflammation, and even cognitive issues. This extract has been used historically to prevent scurvy due to high levels of Vitamin C; this vitamin is crucial to proper immune function. There are a number of phenolic compounds that help us due to anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic and immune-boosting functionalities. Large amounts of reactive oxygen species are produced during illness and inflammation, the compounds of this extract help to neutralize them before self-damage happens.
