Turmeric In Ancient Practice

You may recognize turmeric in the spice aisle at the grocery store, but its value in medicine can be traced back around 3,000 or 4,000 years to ancient India. It was there that the golden spice was used in Ayurveda, a natural healing system.

Ayurvedic medicine uses the spice to alleviate common conditions like bruising, congestion, swelling, diabetes, abdominal pain, and more.

The scientific name for turmeric is Curcuma Longa. It’s a plant from the ginger family. The turmeric you see in the grocery store likely comes from the root of the plant, which is boiled and ground up into powder.

Turmeric and Nerve Pain

An active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, an antioxidant that reduces pain and inflammation.  Curcumin is one of many curcuminoids.  In recent studies, it’s also been shown to improve nerve pain associated with peripheral neuropathy.

Nervous System

Peripheral neuropathy is an umbrella term for the many conditions that impact the peripheral nervous system. The sensory part of the peripheral nervous system sends sensory information from our central nervous system to the rest of our body. These messages alert our bodies to pain and enact regular bodily functions like movement or digestion.

The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcumin can help to reduce and repair tissue damage caused by peripheral neuropathy.

This makes turmeric a non-toxic and natural alternative to over-the-counter medications or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).  Some people may find that turmeric can reduce overall levels of testosterone by way of reducing the activity of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme.  This is advantageous in the treatment of prostatic hypertrophy in animal studies and is being looked at for some assistance with cancer therapeutics.

Concentrating on Curcumin

Pain relief aided by curcumin can be found in our Joint Health Multivitamin and in the Pain + Relief Recovery Cream.

Within both these products, Dr. Warner combines the ancient medicinal benefits of turmeric with other natural remedies.

The Joint Health Multi includes Piperine Black Pepper Extract to aid in digestion, along with ginger root extract and PEA for further inflammation and pain relief. Because curcumin is a fat-soluble substance, Dr. Warner recommends taking the Joint Health Multi with a full meal that includes some form of healthy fat. This will ensure the full dosage of curcumin is absorbed.

The Pain Relief Cream also provides relief to muscles and joints with its concentration of curcumin, PEA, menthol, rosehip, and other essential oils.
