Neuroprotective Effects of PEA Against Alzheimer’s

What is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common forms of dementia. About 60 to 80% of dementia cases are a result of Alzheimer’s disease. This disease can affect memory, thinking, and behavior. Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease that will worsen over time.

Alzheimer’s disease affects the ability of brain cells to properly perform their functions. This failure of function can start in one area of the brain and spread to other areas. Affected brain cells eventually die and the damage becomes irreparable.

Currently, research in Alzheimer’s disease is massive and only growing; a cure is desperately needed for our aging population. So far, no drug or regimen has proven to be very effective.

What is PEA (Palmitoylethanolamide)?

Palmitoylethanolamide is a natural anti-inflammatory lipid (fatty acid amide) that has no known side effects. In recent studies, it has been determined that PEA has the potential to “protect against neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, thus indicating that the compound possesses exceptional potential as a novel treatment for neurodegenerative disorders” including Alzheimer’s disease.

PEA has demonstrated the ability to target areas in both the central and peripheral nervous systems with the potential to reduce the activation of mast cells, a part of our natural immune system.

Mast cells are a big part of the non-neuronal source of nervous system inflammation. Like all systems, the functional units (neurons) require support and care; the non-neuronal cells of the central nervous system provide this back up. PEA promotes their integrity and function.

PEA has been shown to help maintain “neuron integrity and reduce levels of neuroinflammation” in vitro in one study.

There is still much to be studied when it comes to neuroprotective effects of PEA against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, but studies have shown that PEA may prove to be a potential contender in the treatment of the disease especially during the early stages of the disease.

By no means are we saying that PEA should be regarded as a treatment for a disease of course. Rather, we believe that PEA holds promise as an adjunct for your natural ability to fight neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation.
