Why You Should Use Supplements For Joint Pain

Why You Should Use Supplements For Joint Pain

What Causes Joint Pain?

There are a number of conditions related to joint pain – arthritis, bursitis, tendon damage, and nerve irritation are some. Any of these can lead to pain in joints throughout your body and make it difficult to carry out daily tasks or participate in the things you love to do.

The common thread among these conditions is chronic inflammation. Our inflammatory response is natural, but when our immune system does not check inflammation and it becomes chronic, we feel the results of this in a number of different ways.

Chronic inflammation can be the consequence of several different factors including diet, exercise, environment and oxidative stress levels. Oxidative stress is also the result of your diet and environment. It’s caused by a disproportionate amount of free radicals to antioxidants. Free radicals are unstable and can cause stress at the cellular level and damage your DNA.

Both oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are usually indicative of mitochondrial damage.  The mitochondria is the engine of each cell. Without proper bioenergetics, any cell will fail.  This includes cells of the bone, tendon, ligament, synovial lining, blood vessels, cartilage and nerve fibers.  Anything that improves mitochondrial health will reduce excessive levels of free radicals, reduce chronic inflammation and allow for better function with less discomfort.

Lifestyle Choices That Can Reduce Joint Pain

If you can reduce chronic inflammation and other negative factors that contribute to joint pain, then you can lower the amount of pain you experience and prevent further damage.

Moderate exercise can suppress chronic inflammation throughout the body by promoting a healthier immune system. With joint pain, even moderate exercise can sound like a challenge, but living actively doesn’t have to be daunting.   Any movement is better than no movement.  Even fidgeting helps and will reduce all-cause mortality over time.

Taking small steps, like parking further back in the parking lot can get you moving more often and help increase your daily exercise. You can always build up to doing more by taking the dog on a walk in the evenings after dinner, or power walking in the park with a friend.  Taking a short (20 minute) walk after dinner will also remove glucose from your bloodstream and allow you to enter the evening fast quicker and more effectively.

A healthy diet like the Mediterranean Diet is also a great way to reduce inflammation. The Mediterranean Diet focuses on whole foods, not processed ones,  like whole grains, fish and seafood, nuts, vegetables, fruits, and extra virgin olive oil.

When you’re taking in a diet that’s rich in omega-3s, antioxidants, and olive oil, such as the Mediterranean one, you’re taking the positive steps to reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

Even with the best diet though, it can be difficult to get all the nutrients we need – and let’s face it, we’re all human. We all crave certain foods and that’s okay from time to time. But that’s also why Dr. Warner created Well Theory – so you can supplement your diet in order to reduce pain and without the side effects of NSAIDs like ibuprofen.  Dr. Warner believes in optimal aging and is on a quest to find and use the science to achieve that goal.

Well Theory Supplements For Joint Pain

When you’re looking to reduce inflammation and joint pain, remember, Well Theory’s site has an  entire page dedicated to supplements that do just that.

A supplement that Dr. Warner suggests for her patients regularly is Tart Cherry Extract. This mild supplement is an alternative to NSAIDs, because it works with the same anti-inflammatory enzymes without the side effects. These 1,500mg capsules help you get the benefits of tart cherries, but without the sugars and calories. It’s also great as a recovery supplement when you’ve had a particularly hard workout or day.

Often customers pair our Tart Cherry Extract with the Joint Health Multi. This powerhouse supplement combines the ancient treatment method of using turmeric and ginger, alongside PEA, a compound your body naturally produces to fight pain. Our capsules contain a 95% concentration of the active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, making it even more powerful than traditional turmeric supplements.

If you don’t get a lot of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, then the Nervous System Multi is a great way for you to supplement that missing nutrient, while fighting inflammation and pain. Well Theory’s Nervous System Multi promotes optimal aging with ingredients like omega 3, PEA, resveratrol, green algae, and NAC. This supplement helps calm painful nerve endings while supporting overall cellular health.  Dr. Warner designed this supplement using all the available information on brain and nervous system health.

Different Types Of Joint Pain

Different Types of Joint Pain

The time to start a supplement regimen is now

Joint pain can come from a number of sources and covers a variety of different conditions.  The ‘joint’ includes many different structures, each with important functions.   Perhaps the most common sources of joint pain are bursitis, arthritis, ligament dysfunction, cartilage and subchondral bone issues, and tendon damage. However, these aren’t always the reason for joint pain. Another possibility is nerve irritation or damage.  Every joint is surrounded by sensory organs and nerves and these might be the true source of perceived discomfort.

Bursitis is the filling of fluid-filled sacs that cushion and protect the joint. If that particular joint is overused through repetitive motion, then the bursa can become inflamed, leading to a lot of pain. Repetitive motion of the joint typically takes place at physically demanding jobs or sports. As with a lot of instances of inflammation though, you can also experience inflamed bursae through trauma as well.   The most common reason for bursitis is idiopathic.  That is doctor speak for ‘we don’t really know’.  Bursal sacs become inflamed and filled with scar and inflammatory proteins simply due to the overall balance of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation in someone’s system.

Inflammatory conditions like arthritis can also cause bursitis. However, arthritis alone can also create joint pain. Arthritis is a degenerative condition that is linked to chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, leading to inflamed, stiff, swollen, and painful joints. A loss of cartilage, a protective connective tissue in the joints can eventually lead to your joints being painfully ‘bone on bone’. Managing inflammation and oxidative stress can reduce your risk of developing arthritis, and help treat the painful symptoms if you already have it.  Arthritis is now known to be a ‘whole organ’ or ‘entire joint’ disease and is considered one of many diseases that are due to chronic inflammatory changes.

Tendon damage can also be caused by overuse or repetitive use. Your tendons can become more aggravated when you don’t spend the necessary time recovering and resting from activities like physical labor and sports. However, tendinitis is not always caused by repetitive motion, it’s degenerative and can be caused by damaged connective tissue due to chronic inflammation.  Tendon health is dependent upon having the right micronutrients to form collagen bundles and the appropriate cross-links.  Growth hormone, rates and frequency of loads, sleep patterns and much more affect tendon health.  Connective tissue disorders often cause tendon problems.  Diabetes can as well.

Treating Joint Pain

One of Dr. Warner’s treatment methods for painful conditions involving the joint is PRP, or platelet-rich plasma therapy. The process involves taking platelets from your own blood and using them to enhance natural healing abilities in the damaged area.  This encourages your body to heal more quickly.  PRP provides the growth factors and proteins needed for tissue healing and inflammation reduction.

Oftentimes patients are told to take NSAIDs, like ibuprofen, but there can be side effects to these temporary anti-inflammatories. Over time, NSAIDs can cause gastrointestinal and kidney damage and more in the short-term. That’s why Dr. Warner developed Well Theory, and incorporated supplements that have benefits that rival the effectiveness of NSAIDs, but in a much more gentle manner.   NSAIDs may still be necessary in extreme situations and Dr. Warner still prescribes them.  However, she believes that a good baseline of control of chronic inflammation makes these needed less often and in lower doses.

Dr. Warner often recommends Tart Cherry Extract for patients with painful inflammatory conditions. This powerful antioxidant is a tried and true method for fighting free radicals that cause oxidative stress and reducing inflammation. It’s great for supporting connective tissue and healthy blood flow. And the best part – Tart Cherry Extract is a mild supplement that doesn’t have the side effects of NSAIDs, but is able to provide the same level of pain relief over time.

Another supplement designed by Dr. Warner for Well Theory is the Joint Health Multi. This supplement combines the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving benefits of turmeric, ginger, and PEA. Turmeric and ginger have both been used for thousands of years to treat pain and injuries, while PEA is a naturally occuring compound your body produces in response to pain. PEA can also be found in Well Theory’s Daily Multi and as a single-ingredient capsule.

Another great supplement with powerful anti-inflammatory benefits and without the side effects is CBD. CBD works with the body’s endocannabinoid system to achieve homeostasis, lowering inflammation and pain in the process. Dr. Warner has incorporated CBD into several Well Theory products, including single-ingredient methods like tincture and softgels, as well as creams and sleep aids. Try the Delta-8 Gummies that feature full-spectrum CBD alongside Delta-8 THC and feel the stress-relieving and anti-inflammatory benefits of this supplement.

Our Best Supplements For Joint Pain Relief

Our Best Supplements For Joint Pain Relief

Joint pain can make your favorite activities come to a grinding halt. And since there is no cure for arthritis, effectively managing the joint pain that comes with it can be costly, time-consuming, and disheartening.

Thankfully, there are natural ways you can relieve inflammation and pain in your joints: which will help you get back to the things you love, without medicinal fog and pharmaceutical side effects.

Tart Cherry Extract For Joint Pain

Tart cherries are a well-known natural remedy for arthritis and gout pain. Tart cherries naturally contain anthocyanins. These are the antioxidant compounds that give deeply pigmented fruits and vegetables, like tart cherries, their color.

The antioxidant property of this extract can help to support your joints as they suffer from oxidative stress and chronic inflammation.

Most of us aren’t producing enough antioxidants, which can be damaging to our overall health long-term. A lack of antioxidants in the body allows free radical levels to rise unchecked - and as free radicals move through the body, they can damage virtually every cell they contact. This includes cell structures in joints, such as cartilage cells and matrix - free radicals can contribute to damage and inflammation in the muscles, bones, and tendons involved in joints, worsening pain.

Tart cherries can also alleviate joint pain in other ways as well! Gout is an inflammatory form of arthritis that affects the big toe joint. A 2014 study that tart cherry juice lowered levels of uric acid in study participants.

High levels of uric acid is the culprit behind gout. One of the easiest and most natural ways to help manage the symptoms associated with gout is with tart cherry extract.

Meet Our New Joint Health Multi

Our new Joint Health Multi is a truly unique formulation that delivers powerful joint pain relief – without the harmful side effects and medicinal fog found in most other joint medications.

This proprietary formulation includes Turmeric (blocks inflammatory cytokines and enzymes, including those commonly targeted by NSAIDs.,) Ginger (controls inflammation,) Piperine (which enhances absorption), and PEA (natural pain reliever) for massively anti-inflammatory and analgesic benefits.

The main benefit of turmeric for joint pain is its curcumin content. Curcumin is an active compound in turmeric responsible for most of its health benefits. Unfortunately, the spice you find in grocery stores doesn’t contain a high content of curcuminoids – the active compounds that include curcumin.

Our multi contains a high concentration (95%) of curcuminoids so you can experience the full benefits turmeric has to offer.

Tart Cherry Extract & Joint Health Multi: Better Together

For a powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and pain-relieving boost, we recommend taking both our Tart Cherry Extract and Joint Health Multi.

You can take the Joint Health Multi at any point throughout the day – we recommend taking it with a meal.

However, since Tart Cherry Extract naturally contains melatonin, we recommend taking this supplement at night.

When you follow up this supplement with the Joint Health Multi in the mornings, you will enjoy full-day support for joint pain and inflammation – so you can improve your mobility and get back to the things you love with less pain.

Tart Cherry Extract: A Simple Remedy For Better Joint Function

Tart Cherry Extract: A Simple Remedy For Better Joint Function

Tart cherries are commonly recommended to help alleviate pain associated with gout and arthritis. They also offer many other health benefits – ranging from better exercise performance and recovery, to a decrease in bad cholesterol.

Today, we’re going to discuss why it’s an ideal natural supplement for relieving pain in your joints and protecting them from future damage:

Tart Cherries Increase Antioxidant Capacity

Antioxidants are what your body uses to neutralize something called “free radicals.” During your body’s day-to-day processes, as it breaks down oxygen for energy, for example, free radicals are produced. Free radicals are molecules that have unpaired electrons.

As they move through the body, seeking new electron pairs, they can “steal” other cells of their electrons and cause cellular damage, inflammation, and more. This can impact your immune health, your brain health, and trigger inflammation in joint tissues as well.

Under ideal circumstances, your body naturally produces its own antioxidants to keep free radicals in check. But when your health is suffering, from lack of sleep, to stress, to bad habits like smoking and poor diet choices – it struggles to produce enough antioxidants to keep these free radicals in check.

Ideally, you want your body to produce enough of its own antioxidants to fight the damage life brings to your joints. But there is no harm in supplementing your antioxidant intake – particularly if you use a natural supplement like Tart Cherry Extract.

Most of us do not and will never make enough antioxidants to actually cause a beneficial change in our oxidative stress. It is important to supplement.

Tart Cherry Reduces Swelling

A 2004 animal study found that tart cherry supplements helped reduce inflammation and pain responses – showing promise that it may be an effective method to reduce swelling in humans.

This makes tart cherry an excellent alternative to NSAIDs, which often have harmful side effects. When swelling is decreased, so is pain. This also helps your joints move with greater ease and range of motion.

A 2013 study showed that participants who had osteoarthritis of the knee that drank tart cherry juice for 6 weeks experienced less pain and greater mobility in the joint.

The participants were also found to have improved cartilage health – which is a good sign that the longevity of their joint health was improved.

One of the best ways to take advantage of this natural anti-inflammatory is through taking a concentrated supplement. You would have to drink a lot of tart cherry juice to experience the full benefits – and that comes with a high amount of sugars as well. Our Tart Cherry Extract supplement includes one simple ingredient: 1500mg of tart cherry extract. This concentrated superfruit promotes joint health, pain relief, and oxidative support within the body.

Why Dr. Meredith Recommends Tart Cherry Extract

Why Dr. Meredith Recommends Tart Cherry Extract

What Are Tart Cherries?

Tart cherries are different from the sweet cherries you’re probably thinking of. The tart cherry tree is one of about 30 species of trees in the Prunus genus. The Prunus cerasus is of the rose family (Rosaceae).

The sour cherry, or tart cherry, is a small tree that rarely grows higher than about 26 feet. The fruit tastes acidic in nature, and the seeds smell like almonds.

This tree has a long history of human use; it is one of the first trees cultivated for its fruits by people. Many believe the origin of this plant to be near the region of Turkey. Others describe the original location to be the Carpathian Basin.

The benefits of the tart cherry have been understood and used in times of Romans, Chinese ancient societies and the Greeks. Today, there is a resurgence of interest in this amazing fruit and its wellness benefits.

Where Tart Cherries Are Grown

The Kutahya province of Turkey has many types of tart cherries. Historically, this has been an area of great production. In Hungary, tart cherry trees are commonly found in backyards.

Today, most tart cherries are exported from Serbia, Hungary and Poland. The USA had the third largest amount of tart cherry exports. In the USA tart cherries are at risk of damage from pests, disease and bad weather due to genetic uniformity and geographic concentration.

In fact, there is mainly a single cultivar grown in the Central and Northern states. This is the ‘Montmorency’ cultivar. This cultivar is named for the French family from whom it came.

The Health Benefits Of Tart Cherries

The health benefits can be found in the many phytochemicals of this dark berry. The first health benefit to be described in a journal was for the treatment of gout. Additional work validated this claim.

Tart cherries drop the levels of uric acid crystals and thus the symptoms of gout are definitely better if one takes tart cherry extract or eats a lot of tart cherries.

Tart cherries were found to be equivalent to indomethicin in a rat model of arthritis. The FDA sent cease and desist letters to many small family-owned orchards in 2005 however, despite these studies, and told them they must stop making claims about the health benefits of tart cherries.

Tart Cherry’s Proven Health Benefits

Many more studies have been completed since then. There is no doubt that tart cherries hold massive amounts of polyphenols and anthocyanins that are beneficial to human health. Much work has been done on performance and muscle recovery as well.

Studies in runners have shown less pain, fewer inflammatory markers and better recovery. It has also been proven to reduce oxidative damage to muscle and other tissues. There is even documentation that Roman soldiers were given tart cherry to treat pain after battle.

In addition, the melatonin content of tart cherries and tart cherry extract is beneficial. Melatonin is a natural sleep aid. Therefore, tart cherry will help the brain to detoxify through antioxidant activities and assist in sleep which also benefits the brain at night.

Tart cherry pulp has even been added to meat and it reduces rancidity and also heterocyclic amine (HCA) formation during cooking; this is due to the highly antioxidant nature of tart cherries.

Tart Cherry: A Natural Antioxidant Source

The anthocyanins in the tart cherry are natural blockers of COX-1 and COX-2. These are enzymes in the pro-inflammatory pathway that starts with omega-6 fatty acids.

Synthetic NSAIDs that mimic this natural activity of the cherry anthocyanins are Celebrex, Vioxx, and Mobic.

Anthocyanin 1 and 2 are abundant in tart cherry and are not found in blueberries, cranberries or elderberries. These anthocyanins reduce COX 1 & 2 activity by at least 50%.

Additionally, these amazing phytochemicals also increase insulin production by the pancreas. To date, there are no reports of any serious side effects, toxicity, or disease aggravation by tart cherries – making it a great, natural option for antioxidant supplementation with little to no side effects.

Tart Cherry Extract is an excellent source of powerful antioxidants and is an effective, natural pain reliever. In addition to its benefits in helping gout and arthritis pain, it’s also an excellent supplement for muscle recovery after workouts.

I recommend Tart Cherry Extract to my patients every day – and developed this supplement so you could have a convenient way to include this powerful natural remedy in your daily routines.
