How Concentration And Memory Are Linked

Chances are, you’ve had instances where you’ve forgotten someone’s name just minutes after an introduction, or had a word “on the tip of your tongue” that you couldn’t quite remember. Typically, this isn’t something to worry about – it doesn’t mean that your memory is starting to wane.

Instead, it means that you simply may not have been able to concentrate enough to remember that word or that person’s name.

Why You Can't Concentrate

The most important part of memory is the amount of attention you’re able to give to the thing you’re trying to remember in the first place. When you learn a new piece of information and focus on it, this helps your brain process and store it for long-term recall.

There are many factors that can contribute to a lack of concentration. First – if you’re simply too busy. When you multitask, you only have so much concentration to go around and each task you’re trying to focus on is less likely to be remembered accurately. 

The human brain usually can’t hold onto more than 3 or 4 things at one time. The human brain also can’t efficiently handle more than two tasks at one time.

What you can do: if you’re working from home, set your own schedule. Block off an hour to only respond to emails. Give yourself a certain amount of time to do needed tasks throughout the day, in a schedule that you can adhere to. It is probable that if you spend less time per task, but devote that time solely to the task, you will actually be more productive.

Lack of sleep is one of the most common things that can negatively impact cognition. This study showed “substantial evidence that sleep is highly important for optimal cognitive function and learning.” 

In other words, doing less work and sleeping more is going to be more productive than trying to do everything deep into the night.

What you can do: prioritize rest. Try to get at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night. To ensure you’re getting high-quality rest, shut off screens in the last few hours of your day, so your body has time to adjust and prepare itself for rest. Many of us are brain-washed to think we should not sleep much, that we should stay up late and work. Turns out, this is the opposite of true.
