Weight Gain

Several factors can contribute to a sudden increase in weight. Statistically, as we age, we are doing less physical activity compared to when we were younger. That, in turn, reduces our muscle mass while increasing excess fat in our bodies. Our metabolisms start to slow down. For women, this can be fast-tracked when menopause hits. 

For both men and women, hormones that normally promote lean body mass are also decreased with aging.

Skeletal Health Concerns

With age also comes a weaker skeleton. As our bodies grow older, they begin to reabsorb old bone tissue at a much faster rate than our bodies can create new tissue. 

This condition is osteoporosis, which can lead to an increase in bone fractures and breaks. Osteoporosis is not exclusive to women, men get this too. Also, if you receive steroid injections or take steroids, you may have osteoporosis too.

Arthritis is also another common condition that affects the joints in our bodies.

Heart Disease

Our circulatory system is one of the hardest working systems in our body. The heart is at the center of its operation.

The heart pumps, on average, 100,000 times a day to process what would amount to 2,000 gallons of blood every day. No - we do not have that much blood in our bodies. Our heart is working nonstop to recirculate the 1.5 gallons that we do have.

But the heart is like every other muscle in our body. It can get weak and strained too. When this happens, it can lead to heart attacks or strokes, especially if you already have problems with your blood pressure or cholesterol levels, which play a large role in the heart’s health.

In the United States, more than 25% of people over the age of 60 have diabetes. While diabetes can develop at any age, the risk increases with age. Even more are believed to have pre-diabetes.  

Diabetes is a serious health condition that develops when your body becomes unable to regulate levels of glucose in your blood.
