Omega-3: A Powerful Natural Solution To Stubborn Inflammation

You’ve probably heard of the many health benefits of Omega-3’s. It has many benefits ranging from anti-inflammatory benefits, to better heart health, and more. Because of this, our new Nervous System Multi contains Omega-3’s.

The Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) help to generate resolvins and protectins. These metabolites of Omega-3 are thought to resolve (end) chronic inflammation.

In normal situations, inflammation in the brain can be resolved by natural processes. However, chronic inflammation leads to loss of tissue function and failure of the cells within the brain and nervous system – causing permanent damage.

Therefore, it’s essential to start being proactive in protecting your brain and nervous system health before damage occurs.

How Omega-3’s Support Nervous System Health

Omega-3s maintain the nerve membrane and myelin sheath health. Myelin is the material that surrounds nerves and allows for efficient conduction of the electrical signal.

Omega-3s help to keep the cell membranes of neural tissue flexible and this improves their function.

Omega-3 consists of EPA and DHA. EPA is involved in the functionality of a cell such as signaling. DHA is more important for the structural properties of a cell, such as the cell’s membrane. Both of these Omega-3's are essential for better cell health in different ways!

It is well known now that the proper amount of Omega-3 as opposed to Omega-6 in our bodies and brains is important to reduce chronic inflammation.

If Omega-3 is in the cell wall rather than Omega-6, not only is it more flexible – but it also produces less inflammation.

The Benefits Of Omega-3’s Over Omega-6’s

Eicosanoids are the precursors of prostaglandins and other inflammatory molecules. These molecules are locally produced on-demand, in response to damage or infection. They are derived from Omega-6 or Omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-6 membranes produce inflammatory proteins that are very aggressive and self-attack if not controlled.

By replacing Omega-6 in the membrane with Omega-3, less damaging products are made of eicosanoids. Most prescription NSAIDs treat pain by controlling overly aggressive eicosanoids.

Why Omegas Are Essential For Overall Wellness

The human body and brain absolutely need fats. The type of fat you consume, however, is massively important.

Polyunsaturated fats are flexible fats. These allow for better cell membrane function and adaptability.

Fatty acids are the main building blocks for cells and organelles, including the mitochondria – which are responsible for producing energy. The function and the stiffness of a membrane depends on the Omega type.

Each Omega-type fatty acid has carbon double bonds in different positions and this ultimately determines the functionality of the cell membrane. Flexible membranes filled with omega-3 are more permeable and the receptors work better. For example, the insulin receptor works better if the membrane on which it sits is flexible.

Omega-3’s And Oxidation

Omega-3 prevents the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs). LDLs are vital to proper nervous system health. However, when LDL’s are oxidized, problems arise. Omega-3s protect from this.

DHA, an Omega-3, inhibits the development of inflammation in endothelial cells and blocks the expression of LOX1 (lipoprotein receptor 1). The LOX1 brings oxidized LDL into the endothelium and allows atherosclerosis, or the deposit of plaque along the inner walls of arteries, to start.

LOX1 mediated ROS generation also causes mitochondrial damage. The Omega-3 DHA stops this in the brain and elsewhere.

Omega-3 is very beneficial to the autonomic nervous system. It promotes more activity of the parasympathetic pathways instead of the sympathetic pathways – and this reduces stress and inflammation.

The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for “fight or flight.”

The parasympathetic nervous system, however, stops the body from overworking, and restores the body to a calm state – it controls homeostasis.

Chronic inflammation is associated with too much sympathetic nervous system activity, like the over-production of adrenaline. One of the best ways to reduce stress, and chronic inflammation, is to switch the overall trend of the autonomic nervous system to the parasympathetic side.

If one can tip the scale just a little more towards the less stressful parasympathetic pathways, this will do wonders for health.

All of these health benefits are why Dr. Warner decided to include Omega-3’s in her new Nervous System Multi! This new daily supplement is a unique formulation that contains powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to better promote nervous system health.
