Tart Cherries In Bowl With Leaves

Tart Cherry Juice vs Tart Cherry Extract

Tart Cherry Juice vs Tart Cherry Extract

Tart Cherries In Bowl With Leaves

You’re looking to reduce inflammation and pain, and you’ve heard about Tart Cherries, but you’re not sure where to start. Whole fruit, juice or supplement?

Ideally, we get our nutrients from whole foods, but tart cherries can be difficult to come by. And when you do find them, you’ll have to eat a lot – over 100 cherries daily to feel the anti-inflammatory benefits. That equals about 400mg of Tart Cherry Extract.  A single cup of the juice could provide about 60mg.  There can be about 30 or 40mg of anthocyanins in each 100 grams of the fruit.  Some studies report even more, about 300mg of the phenols.

Benefits Of Tart Cherries

Before we dive into the debate of juice versus supplements, let’s look at the many benefits associated with tart cherries. Studies show that in high doses it is beneficial for relieving joint pain associated with arthritis, and improving the condition of other health concerns:

  • Decreased oxidative stress
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Muscle soreness
  • Sleep
  • Cognitive function
  • Cardiovascular health
Tart Cherry Juice & Cherries

Tart cherries are a natural antioxidant supplement that helps the body neutralize free radicals. This is what allows for a decrease in oxidative stress, which promotes overall cell health.

They also work in a similar way to NSAIDs, without the associated negative side effects by blocking the same COX-2 enzyme along the inflammatory pathway.  The process by which natural polyphenols achieve this result is different from synthetic drugs.

So, Juice or Supplements?

Tart cherry juice and supplements are the more efficient methods to consume a beneficial amount of tart cherry extract. But which one is better for your overall health?

Tart cherry juice may seem like the preferred option, but most juice you’ll find has added sugars to improve the naturally bitter taste of tart cherries. Including sugar as an ingredient in the juice actually works against the naturally anti-inflammatory benefits – so this may not be the best option for those looking to reduce inflammation.  Even if there are no added sugars, juice is just fructose without fiber by definition and this should be avoided.  If you’re not getting the fiber you would find in the whole fruit,  the benefits of juice are slim compared to a supplement.

With a supplement, you get the concentrated form of tart cherries, without the sugars, bitter taste and in higher doses.  In our opinion, this is the best option.

Our Tart Cherry Extract is offered in 1500mg capsules, a higher dose that allows for the health benefits listed above. With all the time you’ll save not eating hundreds of cherries, you can play with the kids, ride a bike, or simply enjoy a walk that isn’t bogged down by pain.

Woman with Fibromyalgia

How Tart Cherry May Help With Fibromyalgia

How Tart Cherry May Help With Fibromyalgia

Woman with Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a painful condition that is accompanied by widespread pain, fatigue, and sometimes there are mental health consequences or cognitive impairments. This is considered a problem on a spectrum of central sensitization syndromes. Some also consider this to be an endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome. Others simply refer to fibromyalgia as ‘’myositis’ or inflamed muscle.

There is no known cure for fibromyalgia; however, there are many medicines available that can help control symptoms. There are also remedies that can halt the root causes of these symptoms.

What Does Fibromyalgia Do To The Body?

Fibromyalgia symptoms have been observed to flare-up after an event of physical trauma, infection, surgery, or psychological stress. Symptoms can build slowly or appear suddenly.

Pain associated with fibromyalgia is generally described as a dull ache and can manifest almost anywhere on the body. However, sometimes, there are sharp and distinct areas of pain.

Most of the time, the pain is in muscle or fascial tissues. The severity of pain often interrupts sleep and can cause brain fog. There are mood disorders associated with this condition.

What Is The Cause Of Fibromyalgia?

Researchers have found that the condition can develop due to genetics, certain types of infections, or certain types of physical or emotional trauma. As with many such chronic and painful conditions, there is generally a basic problem with inflammation and also oxidative stress damaging cells and causing pain.

Pain associated with fibromyalgia is thought to be caused by an abnormal increase of chemicals (neurotransmitters) that stimulates and triggers pain receptors. Researchers believe that these pain receptors become sensitive and overreact to stimuli. In other words, such receptors trigger what the brain considers pain even with simple and normal movements or touches.

Tart Cherry As A Form Of Fibromyalgia Pain Management

Many people with fibromyalgia utilize prescription and over-the-counter pain relievers to manage their pain. Over-the-counter NSAIDs are by far the most common types of pain relievers. NSAIDs have some side effects associated with long-term use such as stomach ulcers and an increased risk of strokes and heart attacks. Narcotics are often prescribed for this condition as well. However, the risks of narcotics are so many and so horrible, that these are not really a good choice for most people.

Tart Cherries are a natural anti-inflammatory that targets some of the same enzymes as NSAIDs, but in a much more gentle manner with none of the same types of side-effects. Tart Cherry is a Cox-2 inhibitor that is not known to have the same side effects as NSAIDs. Cherries also are packed with antioxidants, which help keep your free radical levels low. Increasing your antioxidant intake can help reduce low-grade inflammation, reduce brain fog, increase energy levels, and more. Indeed, the fundamental source of what we call pain is generally damage to cells and stimulation of nerve fibers from the mechanisms of inflammation and oxidative stress.

This study found that participants with fibromyalgia experienced less pain when they drank 2 bottles 10.5 oz a day for 10 days.

Why Tart Cherry Extract Should Be Part Of Your Yoga Routine

Why Tart Cherry Extract Should Be Part Of Your Yoga Routine

Yoga training in course

Yoga has many incredible health benefits. These benefits range from improvements in mental health to well-described and researched benefits for physical health as well.

A 2012 review found that “mind-body exercise, such as yoga, couples sustained muscular activity with internally directed focus, producing a temporary self-contemplative mental state. It also triggers neurohormonal mechanisms that bring about health benefits, evidenced by the suppression of sympathetic activity.

Thus, it reduces stress and anxiety, improves autonomic and higher neural center functioning and even, as shown in some studies, improves physical health of cancer patients.”

If you already have a yoga routine, or would like to start a daily yoga practice, here is one addition Dr. Warner recommends for enhancing your practice and its health benefits.

Tart Cherry Extract: Plant-Based Antioxidant Benefits

Tart cherries and deeply pigmented fruits and vegetables contain an abundance of flavonols and anthocyanins. These phytochemicals have powerful health benefits. They are antioxidant, which means they empower your body to ward off oxidative stress.

Read more: 5 Things To Know About Oxidative Stress & Free Radicals

The impact of oxidative stress is still being studied, but the most common detrimental effects include fatigue, widespread inflammation, “brain fog,” increased susceptibility to illness, and more.

Oxidative stress occurs when free radicals are left unchecked. You get free radicals from your body’s natural processes, like when it breaks down oxygen in your cells. However, you can also get free radicals from pollution, lack of sleep, heavy metal consumption, poor diet and other lifestyle factors.

Free radicals are unpaired electrons that, as they move through the body looking for new pairs, can damage surrounding cells.

Your body naturally produces antioxidants to combat this, but often we aren’t producing enough. This makes supplementing with antioxidants, particularly natural, plant-based ones like tart cherry extract, essential for prolonged wellness.

The Perfect Addition To Your Yoga Routine

Tart Cherry Extract’s antioxidant nature makes it a great supplement for daily antioxidant intake, but it also is especially beneficial for recovering after your daily workout.

Tart cherries naturally contain melatonin, which is what your body produces to prepare itself for restful, healing sleep.

This is why we recommend taking our Tart Cherry Extract in the evenings! It will not make you drowsy, but instead preps your body for healing rest. Most of your brain’s healing activities happen while you’re asleep, so boosting it with antioxidants helps support your brain’s essential “housekeeping” tasks.

The antioxidants within our Tart Cherry Extract also have anti-inflammatory benefits as well.

Yoga is usually not overly strenuous, but if you are attempting challenging poses, this supplement will help ease muscle tension and pain for faster recovery.

Getting Rid of Gout

Getting Rid of Gout

How To Prevent & Treat

gout flare-ups

Gout is a sophisticated form of arthritis, one that’s characterized by the quick and severe waves of pain, tenderness, and redness – often in the big toe.

It can subside, bringing days without pain, only to be followed by another onset of attacks, known as flare-ups. There is no cure for gout, although prevention and management techniques exist to reduce the side effects of this painful illness.

How Is Gout Caused?

Gout is caused due to too much uric acid in the blood. High levels crystallize the acid, which forms around the bone or cartilage. The exact cause can be attributed to genetics, diet, and various medical conditions.

Those with gout cannot process these crystals properly, and so they collect in the joint.

Genetics has the strongest influence on your uric acid levels, while medical conditions can also affect them, with diet far behind. For the latter, it is believed that a healthy diet, mixed with exercise, can help manage uric levels. Specifically, avoiding foods such as shellfish, red meat, and beer help to control gout.

How Can You Prevent Gout?

The best way to prevent gout is to focus on your uric acid levels, doing what you can to keep them under control. Achieving this involves lifestyle and dietary changes, focusing on drinking plenty of fluids to flush out the uric acid, as well as eating foods with low levels of purine (the compound that creates uric acid).

To manage your uric acid levels, you should lead a healthy lifestyle. That being said, there is no sure-fire, end-all solution out there, only ways to lower your uric acid levels.

There is no available pharmaceutical explicitly used to treat gout, just medication to treat other illnesses that help with controlling uric acid levels associated with gout.

What Do You Do

during a flare-up?

Prevention is an excellent method of dealing with gout; however, if you already have it, what do you do during a flare-up to alleviate the pain? Let’s assume you are woken up in the middle of the night by an attack: first, you need to schedule an appointment with a doctor as soon as you can.

Gout is usually not life-threatening, but getting treatment within the first 24 hours of the start of attack is recommended. Professional help is recommended to treat flare-ups.

Generally, a physician will first advise you to take some anti-inflammatory, over-the-counter medicine such as Motrin, Advil, or Aleve. Do not take any aspirin, as it can make the flare-up worse.

You can also create an ice pack for yourself, putting it on the affected area, and drink plenty of fluids while you do this. Take the pressure off your foot and elevate it so that it’s higher than your heart.

Avoid alcohol and try to relax – there’s not much else you can do until you see your doctor. Also, if you don’t have any allergies to them, consider eating tart cherries or tart cherry extracts for management of gout.

How To Take Tart Cherry Extract

How To Take Tart Cherry Extract

Tart Cherries Fruit

Tart cherry extract has a wide range of benefits. It’s most well-known for being used to help alleviate pain associated with gout and arthritis. They also offer many other health benefits – ranging from better exercise performance and recovery, to a decrease in bad cholesterol.

TART CHERRIES AND OXIDATIVE STRESS

Tart cherries are also naturally antioxidant, due to the chemical compounds that give them their rich, dark color.

Most of us are guaranteed to be suffering under some level of oxidative stress. Things we encounter daily like emotional stress, pollution, incomplete diets, and more contribute to excess free radicals - so this is a great natural supplement to combat that.

This is why Dr. Warner developed a highly concentrated, stand-alone Tart Cherry Extract supplement. It contains 1500mg of pure extract, without the excess sugars of cherry juice or bitter taste. Here’s what you need to know about this supplement:

WHAT IS IT BEST FOR?

The most important thing to know about this extract is that while it’s good for many specific conditions – it’s also a great addition to your daily supplement routine, whether or not you’re suffering from joint pain, inflammation, and more.

Unlike pharmaceuticals, herbal supplements don’t typically have harmful side effects, so you can enjoy the antioxidant benefits of this extract without worry. We do always recommend consulting with your physician before starting any new supplement routine, however.

Tart cherry extract has been used to alleviate joint pain for many years. It naturally fights inflammation, lowers uric acid levels in the body (which contribute to gout,) and eases pain in joints, helping to improve mobility and function.

It’s also great for other inflammatory conditions. Tart cherry is a Cox-2 inhibitor that works in the same way as NSAID’s to relieve pain. In one study, women with fibromyalgia who drank 10.5 ounces of tart cherry juice twice daily for 10 days had less pain.

But unlike NSAID’s, you don’t have to worry about side effects – especially if you follow these recommendations:

HOW TO TAKE TART CHERRY EXTRACT

We recommend taking all of our supplements with a meal so each dose is as gentle on your digestive system as possible. The best meal to take it with? Your last meal of the day!

Cherries naturally have melatonin content. However, you would have to eat a lot of fresh cherries to support sleep, since the natural melatonin content is small. Our concentration contains 1500mg of tart cherry extract and is highly concentrated, so you can expect more melatonin than you would be able to consume from fresh cherries.

For reference, to consume about 80mg of anthocyanins (the plant compounds in tart cherries that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects) you would have to consume about 100-120 cherries.

To get the same amount of anthocyanin intake from a concentrated product, like our capsules, you only have to consume about 400mg of tart cherry extract. (Our concentration contains 1500mg!)

Still, this isn’t enough melatonin content to make you drowsy. Instead, you should consider this extract a mild, natural sleep aid, instead of a sleep-inducer. Taking our tart cherry extract right before bed helps support restful sleep.

And since your body does most of its healing work while you’re at rest, the extra antioxidant and anti-inflammatory kick from these supplements help you to wake up more refreshed and ready for tomorrow!
