The Best Ways To Use CBD
Since the industrial hemp plant, from which most CBD is extracted, was legalized again in the USA with the 2018 Farm Bill, many CBD products have hit the market. Because of this, consumers hoping to add CBD to their wellness regimens are often at a loss when they go to choose products – from extract types, formulations, dosage, and more, there are many factors to consider. Keep reading to learn more about some of the most common types of CBD products and which ones may be best for you!
Everyone processes cannabinoids differently, depending on their overall health, lifestyle, whether or not they’ve used CBD before, or other factors, such as medications they’re taking, genetics, etc. This means that when you begin to take CBD, it often requires a little experimentation. But don’t worry! CBD is known to be generally safe and has few, if any, reported adverse side effects. Starting with small doses and working your way up is often the best way to start testing out this holistic, natural compound. With any concerns, seek guidance from a health care professional.
When you’re beginning your research, you should keep a few things in mind:
What extract you’re using. CBD is generally classified into Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, and CBD Isolate. Bear in mind, if the CBD is extracted from the Industrial hemp plant per the USDA guidelines there should be no THC or a negligible amount only found in the herbal remedies.
Full spectrum contains CBD and other cannabinoids, terpenes and other phytochemicals, such as the legal amount of THC (0.3%), and these compounds work together to exert powerful health benefits, known as the “entourage effect.”
What dose you start with. “Less is more” is a good rule of thumb to use when starting your research. Take small doses throughout the day instead of a single large dose, and record your findings. Many authors and doctors recommend starting at about 0.05mg per kg of body weight per day. For a person that weighs 100 pounds that would equate to 45 kg and that would be a starting dose of 2.25mg. Obviously, this is a very low dose; however, some people do not need or want more.
Many recommend not taking more than 2mg/kg/day. Usually, it is good to see a knowledgeable provider if you are planning on taking more than that. This is variable for the reasons outlined above. If you feel any side effects or have concerns you should stop taking the medication and seek advice from your provider. This information is based on Dr. Warner’s research and education and is not verified by the FDA or any other regulatory body. This is also not a recommendation for any person out there; we always ask that you seek professional advice first of course.
How quickly it begins to work. Some products, like CBD-infused multivitamins, work slowly over a month or more. Other products, such as ingestible oils or topical creams or sprays will generally work a little faster. Most natural remedies work with the human body using the body’s own physiology and systems; this means the effects are more gradual and should be more long lasting. There will not be a chemical or synthetic ‘high’ or immediate total blockade of pain. That is not natural.
How long do the effects last.
If you are taking CBD to curb anxiety or reduce inflammation in your joints, take note of how long your symptoms are lessened, or if you are symptom-free. Then discuss that result with your provider or consult and compare that with the current dosing regimen. CBD improves the function of the endocannabinoid system. A lot of people’s endocannabinoid systems are dysfunctional due to chronic inflammation from diet and environmental toxins as well as stress. There are a variety of endocannabinoid deficiency syndromes as well.
What is not needed by the body regarding the endocannabinoid system is usually eliminated on a daily basis. Most natural remedies are needed for long periods of time, some for lifetime. Some of these are cycled. It is best to seek counsel regarding the length of time for effectiveness.
All of this information will help you decide which types of extracts work best for you and your wellness goals.
