The Health Benefits Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Foods like Fish High in Omega 3s

Did you know that there are a great number of health benefits of taking omega-3 fatty acids as a supplement? Let’s talk about some of those health benefits today!

Fights Depression and Anxiety

Studies have indicated that those that consume more omega-3s (through diet or supplements) are less likely to suffer from depression. Those with diagnosed depression or anxiety have shown symptom improvements after taking omega-3 supplements. The omega-3 EPA has shown to be as effective against depression as common antidepressants.

Schisandra Berry: Oxidative Stress

Studies have indicated that those that consume more omega-3s (through diet or supplements) are less likely to suffer from depression. Those with diagnosed depression or anxiety have shown symptom improvements after taking omega-3 supplements. The omega-3 EPA has shown to be as effective against depression as common antidepressants.  One study compared EPA to fluoxetine and found it to be as effective; however, the combination of fluoxetine with EPA worked best.  Most clinical studies look at Omega-3 as an adjunctive treatment along with psychotropic drugs; in these cases, Omega-3 has many beneficial results too.  No-one will be able to recommend Omega-3 as a treatment for this condition as no-one can afford the large trials required for regulatory approval.  However, the benefits for brain health are quite clear when it comes to these fatty acids.

NERVOUS SYSTEM MULTI WITH ESSENTIAL OMEGA-3'S

This Nervous System Multi was designed to help you find natural relief from nerve pain and oxidative damage. The Omega-3s in this multi help maintain nerve membrane and myelin sheath health. Myelin is what surrounds your nerves and supports effective neural signaling. This ingredient helps keep neural tissues flexible and improves their function.

Eye Health

Omega-3 & Eye Health

The omega-3 DHA is a major component of the structure of the retina, as well as neurons, and has been linked to the reduction in the risk of macular degeneration, the most common cause of permanent eye damage and blindness in the world.  EPA can reduce inflammation and is a modulator of cytokines that can induce chronic low-grade inflammation.  Both DHA and EPA can promote retinal and optic nerve health.

Reduce Risk Of Heart Disease

Researchers, decades ago, saw a correlation between lower rates of heart disease and higher fish or seafood consumption.  Since then, omega-3s have been studied and have shown to have great benefits in heart health. They reduce triglycerides, reduce high blood pressure, raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels, prevent blood clots, and prevent plaque in the arteries.

Omega-3 & Heart Health

Fight Inflammation

Omega-3s reduce inflammation in some similar ways to the way NSAIDs reduce inflammation. They reduce the production of molecules and enzymes that produce an inflammatory response. They act on eicosanoids, cytokines, and cyclooxygenase -2 (COX-2). Omega-3 has shown to be a safer alternative to NSAIDs which can have many serious side effects if used long-term.  NSAIDs often simply block the enzyme that produces the proinflammatory products (COX enzymes).

Omega-3s provide different building blocks for the inflammatory pathway and more antiinflammatory products are made.  Also, Omega-3s can indirectly limit the activity of the COX enzymes.  However, the NSAID effect on that enzyme is much faster and stronger.  Over time, the antiinflammatory benefits of Omega-3s dwarf those of the single molecule pharmaceuticals.

Improve Mental Disorders

Those with psychiatric disorders have been reported to have low levels of omega-3s. Studies suggest that symptoms can be reduced by supplementing with omega-3s in those with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder as well as with depression, anxiety and ADHD.

Age-related mental decline has also been linked to low omega-3 levels. A review of studies suggested that omega-3 supplements at the onset of Alzheimer’s may be beneficial.

Reduce Fat In Liver

A reduction in fat in the livers of those with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has been observed in those that supplement with omega-3s.

Improve Bone & Joint Health

Omega-3 has been observed to improve bone strength by boosting calcium in bones reducing the risk of developing osteoporosis and arthritis.  LIkewise, the strong antiinflammatory effects of EPA will reduce the symptoms of arthritis by reducing the ability of the body to mount a chronic low-grade inflammatory state.  By reducing inflammation, the symptoms of arthritis can be effectively managed.
