What Causes Nerve Pain

Neurons of the Nervous System Cells

Nerve pain can be painful, debilitating, and life-changing. While nerve pain is usually incurable it can be treated and managed to increase quality of life. Nerve pain can be present due to a variety of different causes. Today we are going to talk about some of the most common causes.

What Is Nerve Pain?

The nervous system is a vast and complex system of neurons that run throughout the body connecting every inch to your brain. The nervous system links every part of the body together and sends electric and chemical signals that help the body function properly.

The nervous system oversees pain perception. Pain perception can help you prevent serious injury before it happens. For example, if you are cooking something on the stove and hover your hand over a hot pan you will feel a slight pain from the radiant heat. This helps your body know not to touch that surface to prevent serious burns. Those with neuropathy experience pain due to a misfiring of neurons sending signals to the brain when there is no obvious cause. It is basically pain without a purpose.

Nerve pain can feel like numbness, tingling, pricking, and loss of reflexes. Nerve pain can lead the body to feel hypersensitive. There are so many different ways that people interpret the ectopic firing of a neuropathic pathway, we cannot list them here.

Basically, nerve pain can be thought of as pain that comes from the nerve itself.  This is different from nociceptive pain.  That type of pain is caused by the stimulation of a peripheral receptor and the transmission of an electrical signal along the course of a pain fiber to the brain for interpretation.

Nerve Pain Causes

So, what might make your nerves behave this way? Well, it could be a variety of conditions or diseases. Here are some of what are considered the most common causes:

Degenerative joint or disc disease – Nerves can become compressed with degenerative joint and disc disease. As the spine or joint deteriorates, the surrounding nerves are affected by the alteration in normal bone structure thus causing nerves to become compressed and damaged. Usually, the process of degeneration is affecting all systems of the body at the same time and the nerves themselves might be degenerative.

Tumors (cancerous and benign) – As tumors grow, they can press on the surrounding nerves. Cancerous tumors can even grow directly out from the nerves. Chemotherapy drugs and other cancer treatments can cause damage to nerves.

HIV – Up to one-third of people with HIV are affected by nerve pain. HIV-induced nerve pain tends to develop first in the hands and feet. HIV antiretroviral drugs can also cause additional nerve damage.

Diabetes – Over time high levels of glucose in the blood can lead to damaged nerve cells. Diabetic nerve damage is primarily focused in the hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy).

Shingles – A painful nerve condition called postherpetic neuralgia commonly occurs after having shingles. It can appear suddenly with severe nerve pain. This pain follows the path of a nerve that harbors the herpes zoster virus.

Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress – the modern Western lifestyle and diet cause immeasurable damage to the nervous system and often this leads to pain.
